For Bama State
The first week (crab week) is just for crabs drum major candidates and section leaders.
Practice starts at approximatelys 6:30pm on Sunday and consists of sectionals where you learn the basics of standing at attention and how to hold your horn while playing. It's followed by the longest dumbest warm up in history. After that they shove a boat load of traditional music down your throat. Because of all of the oldheads that show up to see what the band looks like you won't get out of practice till 12:00am ish. That's really a zero day.
Day one.
Wake up call for drum majors is around 3:45 or earlier if you stay off campus. The drum majors meet at the music building.
Freshman show up in front of the small caf (at least in my day there is no small caf now.) At 4:00. The section leaders arrive around 4:15ish to get the crabs in line(on all other days the crab section leader will take care of this) and check to make sure everyone's shirts are tucked in last name on front and back of shirt, question mark on back of shirt, f on the front, and all facial hair shaved. The section leaders will fugg with you if they can but around 4:20 the drum majors will be marching up that hill( at least in my day cuz again there is no small caf).
The drum major candidates will be pissed for no reason and will yell and curse alot. They may fugg with any fool dumb enough to show up late or be out of uniform.( advice to future crabs excuses make it worse.) The day will start at 4:30 it consists of a march with hands behind the head singing, early in the morning, to the sweat box( at least in my day there is no sweat box, now they may use lockheart.) A physical ed major will do aerobics with you. It seems gay for the first five minutes until you've sweated out your shirt and can no longer move your arms and legs. Then you line up and march to hornet stadium.2 laps 1 bleacher then 1 lap and one walk the first day. Then you march to old glory to work on facial movements. Then line up and march to the caf for breakfast. You're dismissed at 7:30 ish. Upperclassmen then freshman females then freshman males ( usually they tell the freshman males how sorry they are and make them beat there faces before eating. You'll beat your face a lot during pre drill as a freshman male.) The meal breaks consist of you making a fool of yourself and sleeping on the tile part of the first floor of the music building.
You practice on drill maneuvers on old glory from 9 to 11:15 then march to lunch singing so hard. Lunch is from 11:30 to 2:00 then sectional and full band rehearsal. Dinner from 4:30 till 6:00 then indoor music rehearsal outdoor field maneuvers and indoor rehearsal again. Dismissed at 11:00 and repeat.
On Sunday you don't have to wake up early. You go to church( the bus leaves at 10:00 am) then you practice from 2:00 till 6:00 then your dismissed for the day ( this is where freshman should wash there clothes. On Sunday you notice a lot of new faces with A shirts on they don't speak at first but will make your life a living hell.( if you here a knock at the door late that night don't answer. The. Upperclassmen have tradition of bum rushing your room and stealing all of the goodies mommy bought you.
Monday through Wednesday its the same except now you have a holes screaming at you and then some. Thursday and Friday sees the end of early morning rehearsal and Saturday is music and sectionals( you'll spend sectionals on your face.) Sunday no rehearsal no required church just rest. You'll practice in the evening the following Monday and tuesday. And school usually starts that Wednesday.

4am-8am Aerobics with T Lilly, dude is a BEAST, drilling, first broke up in sections then full unit.
8am Breakfast
9:00am-12:00pm Sectional/full unit on music, field show music is passed out

6:00pm-until-Drilling over marching fundamentals, drilling maneuvers and facing movements. Competition drill is implemented during this week. Example: The crabs are split up in there groups and are drilled, the upperclassmen split up in sections and are drilled, an hour before the session end the crabs combine as one unit then the upperclassmen combine as the other unit, each unit is given different commands to see how well they are executed. Each units goal is to execute the command and sounding off, both units are then combined at the very end and go through intense drilling trying to wake up the town of Grambling. This is done the entire week once the upperclassmen report.
The week after upperclassmen reports, it's fieldshow time, we work on the first fieldshow drill during at the 6pm session. As the drill is completed we work on the transition to the concert formation, dance steps then breakdown. After the fieldshow is completed, it's time to work on stand music. The field is very important to our staff.
