Just to add my two cents...if your band director suggest that you say what is on your mind, I would still hope that you have the mindset of voicing your concerns or opinions in a respectful way no matter what. It seems as the years progress, more students develop this resentful "I don't give a" attitude. It also has to be developed and nurtured in the home. Parents have to provide good examples be demonstrating to young people that respect is a must, no if ands or buts.
Competely understand you...when he asked me to say whats on my mind i said it clear and respectfuly...he just took it the wrong way...now i am a drummajor and i feel that the discpline comes from one the home and two the self nd three(if you in band) the director him self.....now the job of the director is to instill the discpline..nd for the drummajors to enforce it...now if im wrong plz let me know....

In most instances, the student must respect the band director in order for that level of conversation to take place. if the director does not feel the respect he or she is due form the students, then there is a real possibility that there sould be a problem. if the student is disrespectful to the director, then there will be a problem for sure. Directors for the most part respect their students, and a lot of times the students fail tol respect their directors by not following simple directions and being committed to developing their musicianship.
Man you have point. The band directors are always telling us to never be afraid to say whats on your mind, but soon as you do, they want try to say that you were out of line and then like you said, they say they won't mad because they just want the best for you. And frankly, thats what I call a fake- ass nigga. I can't stand it.
yeah i feel you dude...i mean i love my band director to the fullest nd fake i doubt he is but,,, its just alot of things that needed to be brought to the table nd alot of things that needed to be cleared up...

Well to respond to your post young jedi...
learn these lesson quick-
never ask the question that leads to an answer you are not prepared for...
and be ready to accept the consequences good or bad for everything that you do...
I agree with B.Mitchell sometimes band members don't understand that we say things or speak to them harsh for a reason. One thing I know for a fact is that when they get old they always understand why we did what we did!
