Hello Group,
First off thank you to the creators of this outlet that we have to discuss the pageantry of HBCU bands and culture. As a School Counselor and HBCU Grad, I promote our schools and culture all the time. So with that being said, I've been presented with an opportunity to coach a dance team for my school; I accepted. However, I don't know the first thing about coaching a dance team, let alone making up routines LOL; but I agreed to do it, to give our students something positive to be a part of.
I'm reaching out for any advice, suggestions or guidance that anyone may have for a first year coach of a dance team. I thank you all in advance:-)

My advice would be to first familiarize yourself more with the style of dance the team will be adopting. Also start making connections with local dance coaches/sponsors as well as reaching out to local colleges for assistance. Those resources will help with getting things off the ground. As you begin to learn more things will come together better and you will then be able to have a good sense of what direction you want to take with the team. It's always a challenge taking on any type of team or sport that you may not be familiar with, but if you are passionate about learning and growing the team things will come together.
Thank you for responding and your suggestions. I am planning on reaching out to the local feeder HS band director and dance team coordinator to have some of their dancers work with us to get their volunteer hours and make a connection with our middle school students before they transition over to the HS. I forgot to mention this was middle school.
I'm also going to reach out to the local college which is actually Johnson C. Smith University. I thank you for the input and suggestions so much. I will share my progress when we get started. Thank you.
Take Care,
Anytime!!
