I KNOW there is NOT a decrease in talent i.e. ability.........
I also KNOW that there IS a decrease in work ethic, dedication, and patience in perfecting a craft.
In the words of famous jazz educator (and hbcu alumnus) Ron Carter, "Talent is overrated. Hard work is what counts." The difference between the old and the new is that the younger generation doesnt want to be dedicated to whatever is they need to be proficient. There is a steady decline in the performance level of bands/musicians, but not because the students are less capable now than in the past.
This generation doesnt like to stay dedicated to things that dont come easy or dont have immediate results or benefits.

The talent is still alive and well but laziness and more things such as video games, chillen on the yard etc. are more important to peeps these days. Work ethic is not as strong as it used be. You get out what you put in.
Is the music suffering from this tho?....it seems to me that the bands r just as good now as there were back then if not better.

I disagree. Bands were much better back in the day. More innovative and everyone stuck to what they do and didn't change for no one.

Bands are louder now and more out the box on field shows, but neither equate to better, and imo are used to counter the lack of true musicianship and professionalism that is rampant thru this generation. Dont like sayin this, but thats how it seems.

Nation wide the musicianship in (so called)black high schools has went down, due to the teachings and the interest.
(so called)Black school systems nation wide have decreased all across the board! Oh yeah there is still plenty of talent and smart individuals just like back in the day (80's and b4), but the school systems are failing now nation wide. Plus back in the 20's all the way thru the 70's it was cool to play an instrument because all of the singers and groups in the music industry that had record deals had live bands on stage with them, so playin an instrument back then was the [censored] to alot of people....since the early 80's synthesizers have taken control of the music industry and now all cats want to be is rappers and beat makers without any musical knowledge.
So not so much a decrease in TALENT but a decrease in the learnin process and musicianship. ex. here in detroit that arent ANY and I mean ANY middle school bands except for 1. so what does that say for the city wide musicianship on the highschool level....
I feel u on that one Funk....but can u tel me y have the schools systems decline. I kno that there are enough band directiors to feel the jobs so y aren't any middle school bads.No money? Or has there been a backslide in the Quailty of BD's? The students are just a reflection of the BD. (Not tryin to step on any toes BD's)

Bands in the 70's and 80's were the best...
With the introduction of cable, satellite, and video games, even kids with talent didn't progress as they should have.
As the sources and exposure to technolgy increased, woodshedding, dedication, and perseverance decreased.
Kids have too many other options to interfere with mastering their craft.
Much less creme rises to the top now days.
