  • I think it works both ways...
  • No and yes. No because you can have a small band that sounds bigger and fuller than bigger bands(depending on the actual numbers)
Depends on what u talkin' bout lol, seriously tho.....

If you dont have players you can have a big sloppy band full of miss pitches and bad articulation/intonation, same with a small band.

The high school band that I directed was small and we had very nice clean sound better than the bigger high school bands that were around.

But if you are a college band and you only have 80 to 90 people and your competition is 150 plus you must NOT try to out crank them with volume. you must lick them with cleaness and musicianship.
but you can have the smallest band but the best band.
  • Size doesnt matter unless ur looking for power. And even in that case you still may not need size. 128 killers would smash 250 slackers anyday. Its about production not sound. The more each individual can produce the less people you need.
  • IT depends on what kind of skills the bigger band has. I have seen some 200-300 member college and high school bands that sound like crap. However there are two good exampls of what a large band should sound like. Florida A&M and Bethune Cookman both have massive size, power and clarity within their programs. In their case bigger is better. Besides those two, size doesnt matter at all.
  • FOR THE LAST TIME, ITS NOT THE SIZE OF THE BOAT IT'S THE MO.....oh wait yall talkin bout band size............."leaves"
  • there are 2 types of sound, loudness and musicianship sound! it all depends on musicianship sound! size doesnt matter! they could b a large band dats loud and a small band dat sounds good! the small band would b better because of musicianship! dats wat i think!
  • No....plain and simple....no
  • i agree with you guys about the whole size thing but in a sense a non musician will always say that a bigger band is better because of size and the use of volume. so is it the job to please the larger crowd of non musicians rather than personals with some sense of music??????
  • For the most part, no size does not matter. However,There are somtimes i seen bands that are to small (example) if a band has 1 tuba,2trumpetrs3t-bones and a sax. Believe it or not sadly.... I seen some like that here in houston. Im just thinking why did you even bring them here. Well, honestly i know why it's important to give the kids some experience ,but i still SMH in dissapointment. and I much rather see a big band that is sloppy. At least i can tell what song their trying to play LOL...

Well personally to me from a directors point of view you want to PLEASE your musical state of mind, meaning teach the students how to be musicians not compromising their musicianship for the sake of non musicians. Now non musicians may talk sh*t when they see the size of a smaller band compared to a large one BUT IM TELLIN YOU.....when your band can PLAY, it doesnt matter bout the size you will get your just due.
Now with the crowd pleasing you want to play some up to date songs that the people can relate to...but that's bout it, it aint about pleasing the crowd all the time.
    Does size really matter??????
so some believe that the bigger the band the better they are. but have seen some bands that was small with a great sound. what do you guys think?????
