It depends on your preference...
Black dots have a warmer sound that wont drown the band.
Silver Dots have a deeper sound the gives the bass/tenor some "knock"
However, the pitch from a black dot, in my opinion, carries a bit further.
If you ever pay attention, Funk Factory (a section that uses black dots) can balance with a 200+ member SU band with only 4 tenors and 4 basses. Thats because the pitch travels a greater distance, and the drums are tuned at a low pitch.
With that being said, you can also achieve the same sound with silver dots if you adjusted the tuning.
In my experience as a student and an instructor, I've noticed more broken silver dots than black dots.

oh , yeah . i qot too , ih been marchn ' at washinqton-marion for 5 years now . & my first year we had black dots & ih saw how they was bustin ' easily & thenn they switch heads toward thee end of the year. & ever sincee then we been playn ' with silver dots . & ih think they way better . / youu savee alotta money with them & prolly the only way they bust is if you beatn ' entirely to hard on iht & youu jusx wanna be heard .
