Effective this  Fall 2010!

IN-STATE Scholarship ( Louisiana Residents Only)

P1 Scholarship- $2,000 per semester
P2 Scholarship- $1,500 per semester
P3 Scholarship- $1,000 per semester

P.S. The price is like that because it's cheaper for in-state studentsto attend Grambling and most of the time band scholarship plus pellgrant (which is free money) in the amount of $3,000that is usually granted or close to it. Mind you that if you receive aacademic scholarship that pays majority of your costs so the bandscholarship is just extra money in your pocket. ATTENTION: You must maintain at least a 2.0 and at least pass your courses with 12 hours of credit to maintain your scholarship.

OUT OF STATE (Non Louisiana Residents Only)

P1 scholarship- $2,500 per semester
P2 scholarship- $2,000 per semester
P3 scholarship- $1,500 per semester
Out of State Fee Waiver- $2,800

So if you receive a P1. that's $2,500 + 2,800 which is roughly $5,300 per semester

So add the $3,000 that most people receive from pell grant so that would be $8,300per semester and if you're eligible for an academic scholarship whichin most cases pays for the majority of you school, the band scholarshipand the out of state fee waiver is extra money coming back to you inyour pocket. ATTENTION: You must maintain at least a 2.0 and atleast pass your courses with 12 hours of credit to maintain yourscholarship and out of state fee waiver.

P.S. Many colleges don't have the package: Band Scholarship plus Out ofState Fee Waivers and many make you take a certain amount of hours. AtGrambling you can take the minimum or the maximum that the Universityallows. TheUniversity says in order for you to be a full time student and be ableto march in band you must take at least 12 hours and the maximum is 16hours unless granted special permission. It is Grambling's duty tograduate students and not keep students in school forever.

Keep in mind that in Spring 2011 the scholarship and out of state fee waiver at Grambling will receive another increase.

  • I'm happy they are pumping more money into the program. More money and plus a new band building are great recruiting tools, whomever overlooks it is very dumb lol. The money is there. Now attracting better and more musicians should, i said SHOULD, be easier.
  • Sounds like somebody trying to beef up this upcoming year. I'm anxious to see GSU next year real talk
  • That's their unguided arses, gonna have to get loans out the arse and be in debt for the rest of their life. Many don't think of the long term future they just look at the current and the near future.

SHOULD....but....alot look at bands that they can't contribute anything to....bands that already have a full roster, for lack of better term. If I was useful at JSU, and I was graduating this year based on the PREVIOUS SEASON'S performance.....I would surely go....but as I implied before....I'm graduating....I like JSU...."oh dang....Grambling throwin big money....but they ain't that good....they could use me on bone.....BUT THIS SOP SO IMMA GO!!!!".....mind of the modern student...not gonna hurt our recruitment I bet tho....this is an excellent package tho....lord...

  • Now come on, while money is great and everything, that should not be the sole purpose for choosing to attend a school. Can you really call someone misguided because they want to attend SU or JSU over GSU or Alcorn (while taking less money) because the quality of band and educational degree programs? Just because SU and JSU have had a stronger band program than GSU does not mean a person cannot be useful or make a huge impact at that school. "GSU might need some trombones, but SU and JSU are the best and I want to learn from the best."Besides, the only people that should be basing their future educational decision solely on the band are future music majors. I certaintly hope these students are looking at the quality of their degree programs at these schools before chasing the money.
  • I could feel that in the bold, that's if GSU's programs weren't on point but they are lol. This situation is very simple: if someone wants the majority of their education paid for while others don't or can't give you that same benefit so you will have to get loans and have to pay them back for the rest of your life then that's on the person and their family. I'm sure some people will benefit from GSU's package, plain and simple. And a music major doesn't have to base their music education career off a marching band because they are great bands that have outstanding marching bands but their music program is in shambles and i'm not going to say any names, i was quite shocked at some people's music programs that have good marching bands but they are have major accreditation problems and lack of staff in their music program as a whole.

  • 1) Hopefully those students know how to complete a FAFSA on time to see if they qualify for grants. I can definitely tell you that our department is understaffed, but all of our teachers are of good quality, so while they may be overworked and underpaid for their services, they get the job done. After the concert at the LSU Manship Theatre, I think the BR community(the rich folks) got to see the other side of our band department besides just the marching band. These budget cuts are a major problem, hopefully our new system president can offset Louisiana's budget problems.

    2) Southern and Jackson State are both great institutions of learning in addition to having good marching and concert band programs. It is not like a student will go broke by not having their full tuition paid for by the band, there are many more opportunities for funding out there. When you have your academic stuff in line, having a good band program definitely wouldn't hurt.
  • Not many peeps are eligible for academic scholarships so what world are you living in? LOL. I don't see why you keep insisting on bringing SU and JSU in the equations because this thread was not made about the two in no shape or form, it's about Grambling, increasing their money to attract musicians and pay for majority of their education at the same time. It's sad that the Baton Rouge community just found out that SU does more than marching, but that's not the communities fault. P.S. Grambling is also a great institution also so i don't know why you keep repeating that BS about SU & JSU like their a packaged deal or something. SMH.
  • 1) I never said Grambling didn't have its academic stuff in place, I was just saying that hopefully people are making their decisions on a well-balanced plan of more than just money or band quality.

    2) I used Southern and Jackson State as examples of schools with successful band programs, but get the students for reasons other than just band or money. I am certain Grambling wants students that want to make the full committment to the school and band programs instead of its money. You don't want an organization full of band gold diggers.

    3) So you mean to tell me when ya'll go shake it at Oklahoma State or Nevada for football season, do they know more about your marching or concert band? That is the case at every HBCU including FAMU( whom I think has the best comprehensive music program amongst the Southern HBCUs). Just look on Youtube, how many clips do you see of Southern, Jackson State, or Grambling's marching bands compared to their concert ensembles?

And I agree with those academic standards, we don't want any career college students.
