how do you teach a kid or a certain section..to gain confidence...we all remember the time when we were scarred to crank,become a "beast",scream etc...but sooner or later we lost our musical virginity...so how do you break the shell that these kids have...ex.playing soft..not sure about things...kinda like a freshman....BUT WHERE DO WE DRAW THE LINE TO TEACH THEM THE CONCEPTS OF BEING A GOOD MUSICIAN...im askin yall...how do you bring out the BEAST in someone?!?!

It;s only so much you can explain to someone. Other than that they'd have to be in the presence of good musicians.

NEWS FLASH!!!...Over the last 2 years I have encouraged my kids to join the site and talk to the college ppl about the craft so that they will break out of their shell. My kids spend Monday mornings talking to me about all the internet hazing and clowning that they have to endure whenever they post a discussion. Y'all need to stop that ish and give these kids credit for having the guts to ask for help from older musicians. Y'all are discouraging kids and that's so not right!
So... how do we teach them to play....answer their questions instead of clowning them!
Gotta give them a starting point...and reachable goals to meet. When they meet each goal, their confidence is sure to build. You gotta give these kids positive reinforcement when they reach their goals...and encouragement when they fall short.
Just make sure that the goals are realistic for EACH member. You aren't gonna awaken the "inner beast" in students who are trying to learn overnight. It is gonna take time.
Anyway...When I was coming up, my BD gave us books to complete. I think one book helped me out more than the others:
"First Division Band Course" By Fred Weber helped me out a lot. This is actually a series of books for each section in the band. It starts off at the very beginning (Part 1), and increases in level of difficulty and technique in the following parts (Parts 2, 3, 4 and so on). It's full of scale studies, etudes, technic tunes, band pieces, and exercises.
A requirement for anyone in our HS band to even become a section leader was to at least complete Part 3 of the series. The books are pretty inexpensive IMO. Check them out. Maybe your kids can benefit from them the same way I did.
