Mellophones

Why do many mellophones sound different. Is it the brand that you buy or the key key that its in. Which mellophone brand has the best sound. I was trying to buy to new ones for my school because the ones we got now sound like garbage.

  • Well just about all mellophones used in Marching Band are in the key of F (rarely Eb or G). I doubt it's the key. One reason mellophones sound different is because of the mouthpiece. A lot of mellophones come with a trumpet mouthpiece (Bach 3c for example). A T-pet MP will make it sound more Trumpet like and a mellophone MP (and opposite). As far as brand goes, it's common for two different model mellophones sound a bit different in the upper register. Some may sound squeaky while the other sounds nice a full. That's my 2 cents.

If you don't mind me asking; what kind of Mellos do your school use?
  • It's the key, the tubing and the mouthpiece gives it a mello sound. What other instrument in HBCU marching bands or high school show style bands are in the key of F that's used on a constant basis? NONE. So the key is a big part of it.
  • Yamaha

  • Avoid Dynasty. lol. and personally, trumpet mouthpieces are uncomfortable. and i can agree bout the mouthpieces making a difference you'll get a brighter sound with a tpt mp. .
  • Kings are good all around...Jupiter's dont have a good upper register and it sucks period
  • Well Yamaha are cool but personally I think Kings are King. So all in all, it is indeed the key, the brand, and mouthpiece that you use. I don't see why y'all horns sound like garbage. But to answer your question, in my opinion, Kings and Bachs are the best brands while Dynasty being the worst.
*I do indeed play on all these brands every now-and-then so I would know*
  • whT EVER YOU DO ..DO NOT.. I REPEAT TO NOT GET BFLAT HORNS... UGH...

And when you say Bb horns you mean Mellos or F-Horns?
  • The type of mouthpiece and the brand are the two biggests concerns.

If you do use a trumpet mouthpiece.... I would reccommend at least a bach C cup preferably a size 3 rim......although the deeper the cup the darker your sound will be.

Second issue is the brand of instrument...... The King 1121SP Ultimate Mellophone is the best model out there they usually run aroud $1,200 to $1,600 hope that helps.

Bb Marching French horns. They take a conventional horn mouthpiece but they are in the key of Bb like a trumpet. Many corp style bands march them. They have a pretty nice sound. Those are the standard hron in Shreveport schools except at Woodlawn...they use marching French Horns in F. Same horn mouthpiece. You can do some crazy things on any horn if you practice. We used to have kats ringing high Es and junk on those Bb horns. Its really up to you a lot. I have my own Bb and F marching French horns...and a few mellophones LOL.

Personally I prefer Kings and Jupiters. I like Jupiters because of the round sound. I like Kings most though. My main personal instrument is King brand marching mellophone. You might like a Blessing mello....idk. Dynasty horns...I used to own one. It had so much resistance it was ridiculous. I don't like them.
