I have recently noticed that alot of people been on here praising bands that can drill but sound like elementary school bands when it comes to playing ability, I understand drilling is apart of band but what do these bands do in practice when it comes to music is my question ?? The SU BOTB was a joke as far as musical ability!!

Topic Title: Obviously, musician is more important. You can get farther with your instrument if you have good musicianship than if you are a good marcher. It's even better if there was both.
In order to have good musicianship, you have to have the attitude of a musician when practicing and performing. That's where the problem is. A lot (majority) of high school kids (in our community) don't have this attitude. They have a simple minded attitude.
Some bands do not sound good standing up so how do you expect them to sound while moving and spaced out on a football field.
I would say Baker, St Martinville, Madison, Scotlandville and maybe Central (they were a lil tired) were some of the better bands. And we're talking SU musicianship here, not UIL or SHowcase... so yea. The worst marching and sounding (but loudest) bands there were of course the New Orleans bands.
Wouldn't you want your band to learn the music well and balence out the song before even considering putting it on the field? And thats for any song you play! Sometimes its the whole band but in some cases, its the few who get crunk in front of another band n he or she wants the band to hear just him or her. That will throw off the balence, tuning, and the overall performance of that song.
Some of these bands i have noticed in my area of Texas, first few weeks of the football season, their show is a simple drill or 3-4 set UIL drill, Majorette tune(CD) and then fight song off the field. Then go into the stands and sound nasty and bad on nearly every song. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR SCHOOL SONG, DO NOT GET MORE MUSIC THAT SOUNDS LIKE TRASH!!!
When it comes to music, BD passes out the music, goes over it and says it needs work....do not wait until the BD pulls it out again to work....go into a practice room and work on the parts you dont know! It will increase the learning process for the band. And when that happens, you have a thick strong book!
After seeing some of those clips from the SU BOTB...some of those bands did put on a good show but some of those bands i have been following the past few years...Central being the main one, they went out there n gave it some energy! The one thing i have always disliked from Central is their balence.
Walker which has grew in the past few years, they have strong musicians but as a band, where is that musicianship, where is the energy for the drill, where was the balence, especially when ya'll played Neck on the field, nice idea in the show but balence that song out, shouldnt need to hear mellophones/french horns screaming and missing.
Also i would like to add...focus on the drill more than the dance routine. Drill is weighted more than the DR. a Dance routine is somethign that should be practice individually. Drills are when the whole band needs to work as one!

Musicianship or Marching ??

I wouldn't say it was just New Orleans bands because we all know New Orleans bands are just starting to get back to drilling but to me all of them, even the bands that won was GARBAGE, If they really feel like it was good than I don't see a future in Marching bands in Louisiana.. If I was the Band Director I wouldn't put my band in a competition unless i felt they were very well prepared for it, St. Martinville can drill but they sound like trash to me, I honestly felt that Baker was the best band there and I don't know how they didn't win. I understand what Mr. Rawlins is trying to do but that was horrible for OPW to still be messing up a show they've been doing all year. COME ON PEOPLE STEP IT UP!!
This wasn't the most PERFECT drill but it wouldv'e won this battle hands down, Lets get back to a COMPLETE performance and stop excepting anything but Excellence!!
