phrasing

why dont swac bands phrase..imo it sounds stupid to play a half note as a quarter and a whole as 3 beats...looking at some clips of southern uapb...and jsu...the top three bands...they dont phrase...im not tooting pv horns cuz we not the best phrasing band and im not sayin we beasty or the best..im not saying the worst either..but maybe these higher level music assosiations dont like the way play cuz there is nothing musical but playing a note shorter than it supposed to be and sounding out of breath and having holes in the sound..imo

*Back to topic* UAPB does phrase...what are you talkin about?
  • The examples you listed was NOT describing phrasing....you was describing released....so what's yo argument..lol..
  • dude..im in college...and my argument is connecting the notes...its called phrasing ..breathing every 2 to 4 measures in stead of after 4 or 5 notes on trumpet..breathing after every note on tuba..after each no longer than a half note for trombones...phrasing for btones....phrasing is what i mean and most swac band always have that little silence befor beat 1 or when the chord shanges from the tbones...its very elementary....yall do but yall still not connecting the notes ...mostly im talking bout tbones...and trumpeet players...mellos when they have suspended chords need to connect also
  • he makes it sound like the bands are incompetent or cannot play correctly....since when did a swac band need approval from anyone on how they do things...its called "style".....2's..
  • ^^^THIS dude will be banned soon........ Let the countdown begin.......
  • first off we at Bandhead don't tolerate that language......
second off if u can't follow the rules, you'll be banned from the site....

so cool ya tone, just get off this forum, and chill out with all the internet thuggery young'n......

back to the topic.....yeh most songs HBCUs play which are pop, rap and r&b songs are fast paced and the energy and playing style automatically makes a whole note become a dotted half note...im not condoning it but thats how its become over the past few years.....now on ballads if the phrasing it sounds just horrible........the bands just have to work on playing all the way through the note....most prolly think it'll sacrifice power, but it is what it is

  • so its style to not play whats on the paper?
  • thats how its become for the most part.....im not saying thats how its intended to play, but most players go for power with most songs in the SWAC, so they blow hard for three and a half counts, take a deep breath, and blow the next three and a half......unless they have little rhythms they play in the background a la SU & TxSU (sometimes)

  • Prof. was always anal about making sure the Storm "plays across the bar" and play notes for their full value. But IMO, even when I was marching, PV's biggest problems were proper releasing techniques. We kinda sounded like we'd just let the tone die out whenever we wanted it to...and with 175-200 folks ALL doing it, it makes the phrasing sound really weak and sloppy.

Second biggest problem was unified attacks at the beginning of phrases. Everybody was so busy trying to blow, and nobody really listens to match the person beside them. So now, we have sloppy phrase beginnings, and sloppy phrase endings...and now, I've noticed that the Storm doesn't even hold their notes for full value anymore (as it's been stated).

Improper phrasing can make a band sound really tired and fatigued. And this is IN THE STANDS...we ain't even gonna talk about the field...lol

I always thought that PV was one of the better phrasing bands in the SWAC, and that's what set the Storm's sound a part from everyone else. We weren't really known as much of a power band per se...but we had a very powerful and full sound. Today's Storm sounds like they are much more power oriented...which is cool. But IMO, yall need to work on DELIBRILATELY phrasing, until it becomes second nature. Right now...yall are good...but honestly, yall can/should be EONS better than yall are right now...and this could be the first step.

Perhaps arrangers should include the breath marks in their arrangements to fix the breathing problems, which will help fix the phrasing problems.
  • LOL...IMO, I think it is.

I think all bands do this. Invert chords...adding extra notes at the end of songs, screaming...HALF of that stuff don't be in the music...it's invisible, yet we see it...and we play what we see...lol
