  • Scarborough had a drum comp....what is the world comming to! And wheatley WINNING! O wow

    I will say this....
I was at the store the other day and saw 'lil' man with a pair of marching sticks. Out of curiosity I asked him whee he played. He told me McReynolds. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THEY HAD A BAND OR ANYTHING ELSE! Those kids are going to go to Wheatley (or at least they suppose to) Wheatley is in a REAL good situation in that:
    1. McReynolds has a program and those kids are (prolly) going to Wheatley
    2. Holland is suppose to have a program (don't know about that though) and since Furr will never have a band because of their principal those kids COULD end up at Wheatley...

That leaves Wheatley with 3 possibly 4 feeder schools...Fleming, E.O. Smith, McReynolds, and possibly Holland. Wheatley should get out more....

  • E.O.Smith is on and off. They might not have a band until after the merger.. Flemming has been feeding Wheatley since I was in high school. I never understood why those kids went to Wheatley but they were there. I doubt its the whole school that feeds them. Proof. Look at Kashmere. McReynolds did not have a band for a while now they do and I guess its paying off. There is Alot of Furr kids at Wheatley. If those kids are in the band at Holland they could end up at Wheatley cuz Furr ain't got one and Wheatley is the next closet school. Of course this is after the kids that leave the district from the area altogether to go to Northshore, Northforest, C.E. King, Humble, Galena Park etc...
  • Wheatley has a lot of issues because of that No Child Left Behind bs. Last year, they had only I think around 800 or so students in the whole school. Thats not even enough to stay open. The only reason Wheatley and Kashmere are still open is because the community stood up and claimed them as Historically Black High Schools because of their historic significance. The year I worked at Kashmere, there were only about 600 students and the district was ready to close it but Sheila Jackson Lee stepped in.

If HISD and the State would leave Wheatley alone, maybe they could build up the fine arts programs. Until then, people will send their children other places.

I honestly cant hate on them for winning that competition. I cant really say they were good but their school and the community really needed something positive.
