I would like to say for the most part I like the fact that both bands changed up the songs all 3 times! Kudos on that.
Bayou Classic parade: Because Walker Was under the bridge I think it distorted their sound a little. But it doesn't change the fact their Trumpets were dying out at the end... I would give the slight edge to St Aug in that battle...But Walker put up a fight.
ALLA 2012: I think it was a tie until OPW played Party....Baritone's were overblowing and their trumpets missing octaves. Thats why the majority including myself gave St Aug the W.
Bacchus:I was their in person and I watched both videos from TheEdge and MPrice. This battle wasnt even close. Once again OPW messed up on "Party" In the 1st round. and on top of that St Aug played 2 of their most powerful songs in their book. smh St Aug got the W on this one!
St Aug has a well balanced band....They maybe a young band and I dont think everyone is a strong player but they have more experienced people to make up for it. And their book is really deep this year.
O Perry Walker-Has a good program but too many of their band members try to play as indivduals and lack focus. When I saw them at Bacchus against St Aug, it seemed like they really didnt want to battle. Thats just my opinion. I honestly dont see any pride from that school anymore. I honestly feel that their trombones and baritones make that band. But what they need is a solid trumpet section badly. You cannot get the clear win against St Aug if you dont have at least a decent trumpet section.
Because OPW style hasn't changed its almost predictable what their gonna do, which makes it easier for other bands (St Aug) to capitalize off of them. They need to expand their horizons out of that SU style/Carver style Pre Katrina and set a new pathway. I hate seeing a program stall. TRADITON-can sometimes be defined as frozen success. Maximize your full potential.
St Aug's goal should now be to continue to build on their progress you have already made. You should continue to be the top dogs if you do so.
Walker-Get out of that mindset that you cannot be defeated now that you know that isn't true. Let this year be your motivation for next year to get better.

St. Aug vs O.P. Walker..... 3 times 2011-2012 School Year
Bayou Classic - St. Aug won
Alla Parade - Basically a tie, but Walker shot theirself in the foot with Party
Bacchus - I was there. Lets just say Aug…
I personally think Walker lost their hunger after dominating the city 6years in a row as the number 1band in New Orleans plus busting ass all out of the state. I think Walker went 1-2 against St. Aug whom wanted that number spot and won the Crown which they feel rightfully belongs to them anyway according to history. As far as Walker style let them do them Rawlings bands has always had a strong SU influence from Reed to Carver now to Walker so I don't see why it's a problem now so people just need to stop bitching about Walker style. Walker choice of selections cost them against St. Aug simple as that.
I disagree...song selection had nothing to do with the reason Walker lost. It was their lack of execution and quality. St. Aug simply sounded better. I have little problem with Walker's SU influence. In fact, one of my favorite bands of all time had SU influence, Kennedy. However, there is a difference between influence and copying. For instance, in the 90's (every other Kennedy band after 2000 was IMO sad), although Kennedy played SU music they always made it sound like Kennedy--their own. That may be more of a credit to Doc Harris. This is where Walker fails. Instead of using an SU influence to create their own sound, they try to sound exactly like SU--aint gonna happen.
