The reason for the fall of high school bands...

This video CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES why most high schools bands sound the way they do. Everything that could've went wrong with this song probably did go wrong. It's not all about being loud kids. Get some quality sound coming out of your horn, then worry about volume. Anyone care to elaborate?

  • All I heard was trombones and the other parts I did hear were WAY off key
  • bruh its da directors worryin bout soundin loud rather than playin it rite and sounding nice. if i was a bd i would have my band playing the whole song down and sounding nice instead of this. matter fact i wouldnt of brought em out this year. if they was to practice hard on sounding good, working on tone and learning music, next year they would be real nice. even for beginners
  • I think the same thing..thats why me n my sec b workin on tone/quailty all day everyday! i agree %100
  • its the lack of focus mainly...........people want to play loud and "crank" but don't want to focus on challenging literature that will actually get you places.  Also, it is the image that the colleges and universities portray, such as "crankin, yankin, humpin, blowin".  people focus on that and want to be just like it, but since the musicians are in college, it sounds better. But when a high school student picks up their instrument after being exposed to theses colleges, all they want to do is blow.  sn- anyone can make noise, but it takes a musician to make that noise become music
  • wtf?
  • no no no no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • That Darn SU effect ...

  • For everyone that has something negative to say about what's going on at John McDonogh Senior High School need to take some steps back, do some research, and find out exactly what's going on before you ridicule my school like that.

I agree with Quasi in this matter... they should not have come out this year. I'm an Alumni and didn't even know they had a band until a few weeks ago.

The thing is that John Mac now does not have many students interested in music anymore. Nor do many of the other schools. There are so many other things that the kids do now in after school programs and all since Katrina, that marching band isn't something of interest to them anymore. Especially when there's no steady program going on to make the kids interested.

I was going to Landry when I became interested in The Mac! Herb(St Aug's current director) was the band director and he had a formula to getting the band how it was when he was there.

Herb did a spring camp annually and invited students from every high school in New Orleans and surrounding areas... it was a beast! In fact, the homie is working on getting that footage posted on here along with all of The Mac's moments under the direction of Jeffery Herbert and Roderick Paulin. Getting back to the subject... at the end of summer camp I'm sure you know plenty of people transfered for the fall. Lol!

If we had more directors like Herb, The Rawlins, Hamp, Magruder, The Paulins, and Doc Harris we'd definitely have bands like we used to. Until then they'll continue to be interested in the other after school programs rather than band.

It does hurt to see our schools music programs in shambles, and not just John Mac. I don't think it's something to post on here to make fun of. They're high schools.

  • When i was at McMain we had very few students interested in music, people came to mcmain to learn and go home.. and we NEVER sounded like this....  so regardless of what you say about john mac's past, this is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE,  but high school, middle school , or even elementary school standards...
