Im curious to know how important do traditional style bands find UIL? both marching and concert. What is YOUR stance on this? I see administrators using this as a tool to rate the performance of a program throughout the year. Does your administration impose you attend?
You need to be a member of bandhead.org to add comments!
well our administrators at davis do not make us go..BUT ME and the rest of the staff think we should go..regardless of what the corp styles do... EVEN THOUGHT IF IT WAS MADITORIE FOR CORP BANDS TO GO TO SHOW STYLE BOTBS...WE KNOW THEY WOULD NOT GO... we at jeff davis want our kids...our young musicans to be able to do anything!!!!! marching ,crab walk, corp style ,heal toe, concert, syphonic, pit, string ensmble, wind ensmble, trombone quartet, theater music, jazz, contry, stage band..... well you kats get the point...so to me yes i feel UIL is important its one way to show other organization that we do more than just play loud, shake our butt, and dance like..fools ...we need to do what they do ... and even do it better..... it what Prof Samuel E. Jackson calls a well rounded musican...... now I know we all might not like the UIL stuff ..but just think....the more you do there stuff and do it better. the more they will let you do what you want..and in the end if ya really think about it...it will make your program even better....well at my school any-ways....LOL,.... but yeah its very important that we must all strive to love all aspects of music ..and not just ONE.....this is what we trained for..... not just for marching band....LMAO
Its almost like two different worlds. It is almost impossible for a show band to get a high score at uil UNLESS they do corpstyle and I think thats not right. When I went to the HISD band festival last year the best band I saw there was a show band, they were just on point! What is sad is that some of these admin and UIL types do not understand is that most of these HISD kids start playing in 9th grade. Then as soon as they get a good marching 30 they ready to take a 5a school to UIL.
Well the HISD marching festival is not supposed to be like UIL (strictly corp), but exactly what it states. A festival. They bring in judges both from traditional and corp backgrounds. I know it can be done as far marching is concerned, but its imposing more responsibility on both the director and students for marching. They have to be able to both pump 90s, roll step and maintain a 10 degree angle with their horns. Now when it comes to concert band, i think BOTH styles should attend. Like Big AL said, we need to create well rounded musicians that are exposed to all apsects of competition. I'm just curious to see what administration is saying to our directors. I know for a fact that if a director gets a three at some schools...they start considering other directors that will get a higher score. ( just like in sports ie ASTROS , u keep getting a losing record, your bound to lose your job lol)
As far as I know, its not somthing we (HISD) bands have to do.However, it is stuggested that we do. It makes the Director and the School Look much better on paper! Also,Each yr. Administrators stress UIL alittle more each yr, Pretty soon i think it will be a must to go to UIL. Honestly I do not Like UIL,but if its for my students becoming better Musicans, Then Im In it To win it!

It's the only state-wide measuring stick that we have. Some band directors jobs (even with "showbands") depend on success or improvement at UIL activities.
Our Fine Arts coordinator (she has the money) insists that we go. The administration doesn't care either way, but it's nice if we do well.
UIL is a good thing for any band to go to regardless of style. It is very possible for a showband to get a Division One depending on the show that they do. I have heard judges discussing it. When I go to TMEA, sorry but I ask questions. One two different occasions two different bands were discussed. The first one discussed at UIL was Milby. The other one was Beaumont Central. The judges say they really liked the drilling but because the kneelift wasnt consistent and the sound wasnt balanced, they didnt score well.
Band directors need a decent UIL scores under their name in case they ever decide to get a job in another district, without it, you will be stuck in HISD forever. The other part of it like Mr. Jackson says is becoming a well rounded musician. Its hard to justify attending Battle of the Bands all over the United States when you make Straight Division Fives at UIL. Chances are if you make 5s at UIL, you wont do well at Battle of the Bands anyway because most of the requirements are the same. BOTB and UIL both have criteria:
1. Tone and balance
2. Phrasing
3. Starting and Stopping together
4. Formation
5. Energy
6. Execution of style
7. Posture
8. Attention and response
If you can do well at UIL then any other event you attend will be a piece of cake.
Austin High School is going to UIL with the following stipulations. If we make at least a Divison 2, we are going to the St. Martinville Battle of the Bands. Division 1 we will go to the BOTB at Southern and any other BOTB that there is anywhere the students choose. Divison 5 is not acceptable and will result in EVERYTHING being cancelled. Students go ahead and choose your destiny.
Dang Goldy, you doing some great thigns voer at Austin, Hope ya'll make a Division I so ya'll can make it out here on Nov. 7th!!

Exactly...kids dont half do UIL. Be competitive. As a musician you should be able to 'flip the script' as my hs bd used to say. Id love to see the day when a show style band can be the best in both styles...and superior rated concert ensemble....like my senior year! ;)
