First of all this is not to become a argument, but this more of a observation. I look at how Bands, Majorettes, Dance teams that perform in New Orleans stand out from other cities. For example in New Orleans majorettes use 2 batons instead of 1. I have noticed how dance routines are done and how bands perform and I can say the approach New Orleans has is not like any other. What can be the reason?

Each area or region has their own style.... look at the bands on the east coast.... look at florida bands compared to the ones in Houston....each area brings something different to the table
Yjr Make Up of a New Orleans Marching Unit is the Biggest Difference. most people won't understand it or respect it until they understand it as a marching band enthusiast would tell them.
Here's what I see
Perfect explanation, Book!
i think it goes along with how new orleans as a city it different from any other city. its just a whole different cullture.
Is it true that Color guards were placed into the Marching Unit to protect the whole band during parade season? I guess the swinging of the flags will make people get out the way. Ive seen people cross through bands from out of town. But a full Line of Color guards help I believe.
It's only from a standpoint of Pageantry. Their roll is to Guard the Colors .. Bearing Flags and Banners with guns and swords (lol) ... like a Bootleg ROTC that does a high knee lift LOL
Banner Bearers, Rifle & Sword Bearers. that was your first 5 to 8 people people who Led the band to the battle.. as if the Band is the Army
Tall Flag Rockers came Later thanks to Fortier I also believe they as well as Booker T & John Mac were the Innovators behind the Drill Squad.where the Swordsmen and gunmen would do routines with their "tools" ..eventually that turned into Dance Style steps and hip hop moves along with the High stepping challenges LOL
IMO I'd Rather see these dudes due Steps like a Frat ,, Or Public Enemies S1W .. aside from that now days its kinda Fruity
Aside from that. I've noticed Improvements due to HBCU Exposure, The problem is, Alot of the sponsors have no experience beyond high school and their Alma mater
Norfolk State's Spartan Guard was modeled after New Orleans' color guards.
Grambling State used to have a color guard like N.O's before they went with females and or then Dropped the flag girls
New Orleans Dance squads used to do a Hip Rock and wobbly arm movements and strut pretty similarly through a whole parade or game .. Now days some of them dance and strut like HBCU dance teams. and their even changing up Uniforms in mid game...That was so "NEW" to me after the storm, yet its a good thing .. Also. honestly the old isn't bad because its "Clean" and cant be criticized .. watch how folks begin when they think the dancers are getting too raunchy.
if you look at Carvers Dance Squad.. they dance like the J Settes .. Cohen's dance team does the Hip Rock.
The Majorettes (baton girls) and Flag teams have remained the same since the 80's..they still do the wobbly arm movements & hip rock .. as well as the "Step Step Up Kick": ... and they do this simply because its the only thing the sponsors know ... they won't teach REAL techniques because they don't know any better. The Difference between now and the 80's is .. The majorettes stopped wearing band style helmets ...lol ...
Two Flags started at Landry in like 90
Our Drum Majors Used to Direct the band (marching and song wise) 90%. of the time.. and Twirling the stick & HIGH STEPPING was always something GOOD. now.. we have Dmajors doing JSU routines .. some who have it 100% others don't have it at all. I doubt that they even spend time IN the band room anymore .. Its not BAD its just messed up that they're all DIFFERENT yet all THE SAME lol
On another note i quit lol

Book Landry did not start two flags. Two flags started at 35 in the late 70's early 80's. Our flag twirlers have been called double trouble because of that.
