FIELD:Southern-( only because of the drills which draw attention) danceroutines not soo good but a field show is what it is A FIELD SHOW) overrall great drills)UAPB-ill give them the edge at number 2 because uapb came a long wayy on the field the crowd finally giving them responds.Grambling- entertaining field show crowd loves them!!!! dancers are nice this season drilling is too. Now its time to beef the stand book up then we will be fine)Txsu- not as entertaining as pervous years but txsu is a great field band.PVU- need new material too predicable!!!! but great dance routinesALCORN- drilling than went down but need more entertainment in the show overall good shows just lack energy)JSU- honestly for yall to be doing that drill for soo long it should be perfect jsu is truely a stand band field is not where they master and it shows) jsettes is what holds down yall field shows)AAMU- do yall have 2 marching styles??Valley- Now they cant drill for shat lol but the crowd gets in to their dance routines still high schoolish too me for a reasonBAMA ST- i dont kno what yall be doing that field!!!!! When bama was small on the field yall use to be better on the field.-----------------------------------------------------------STANDS1-southern- this new sound southern has im feeling it real talk it fits yall full balanced and not tryin to blow your lungs off you can accualy hear the melody of the song.2.UAPB-this band new sound fits them reminds me of the 04 uapb balanced loud and clean!!! arrangements are top of the swac real talk. BUT STOP THEM DAMN TUBA AND DRUM BREAKS SONGS BE TOO LONG SOME TIMES LOL!!!3-JACKSON- i put jsu at number 3 because jsu does alot of over blowing a hanging over!!! That can be controlled it can but jsu has a good book and is a monster in the stands they are just have attacking and controlling issues.4 AAMU- like it or not aamu is nice in the stands them trombones are nice they are not the 2002 or 2003 aamu but they are nice in the stands they really are.5- GSU- very well balanced this season just had trouble with a few songs are the jsu game but that was very well fixed during the season!!! gsu sticks to their guns in the stands and dont follow the other band!!! but for gsu size this season they did well n the stands!!6-txsu- welll txsu i put u and gsu for the 5 spot cuz txsu seemed iffy in the stands the 1st game yall was a monster with pvu then the season went on yall sound went down but yall truely have a brassy nice sound!!!!pvu- i dont know but its sumthin missing in yall band this season i dont kno if its yall trumpets trying to do sumthin they not suppose to but its sumthin wierd with pvu this season cant put my finger on it!! overall ok book7-Bama st- omg sometimes i dont even think yall have people in yall band who can read it sound ass 2 bands are in the stands playing 2 different arrangements!! but yall truelly are teh most powerful swac band in 08 yall are!!alcorn- for the su game yall was nice then as the season went on it was like ummmm ok!!! in 96 99 00 alcorn was not a hoe at all we need that same band to rise!!!valley- they need a director over there who shit send southern mellos over there!!!( lol ouch but true) they need a director over there who is not playing an will drive this band to what they use to be. they need to go back to chours style cuz show style is not fitting them at all!!THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION AND WHAT I SAW EVERYONE ELSE PUT YALL POINT OF VIEWS ON WHAT YALL SAW AND THINK!!!

Are any of your rankings based on any "serious" research findings? Or are you just having some fun?
If all of this bands were seriously critiqued by professionals in the field, we would certainly would find out that most of the bands have much to work on. Dre'Quynn, I do agree with you of some of your observations. However, I think we all should "did" a liitle deeper when we make our personal rankings. Thanks for starting this discussion:-)
Let's look at the following categories:
1. Intonation
2. Melodic recognition
3. Balanced harmonic
4. Countermelodies
5. Rhythmic Precision
6. Collegiate arrangements and formations
7. Overall marching presentation
8. Balance and blend
9. Horn Carriage
10. Clean dance routines/precise
11. Overall discipline
12. Even how the uniforms are worn
thats why i started the thread man for you and others to put your OWN OPINIONS!!! on what yall think!!! thats is how i felt from stands to field and what i saw!!! what are yours man!!! i respect what you are saying but it was my opinion state yours and others willl u feel me.KeepingItReal said:

Let's look at the following categories: 1. Intonation 2. Melodic recognition 3. Balanced harmonic 4. Countermelodies 5. Rhythmic Precision 6. Collegiate arrangements and formations 7. Overall marching presentation 8. Balance and blend 9. Horn Carriage 10. Clean dance routines/precise 11. Overall discipline 12. Even how the uniforms are worn
1. Jackson State (overall brought the most to the table)
2. Southern (arguably the best, just depends on your preference)
3. UAPB (Drills always nice, finally putting heat behind the horns again with nice sound.)
4. Texas Southern (could be higher but inconsistant as usual)
5. Grambling (almost in the upper echelon but not just yet)
6. AAMU (If field show can improve with some more numbers, could compete for top)
7. Prarie View (improved sound but as many stated, too predictable on field.)
8. Alabama State (size isn't everything)
9. Alcorn
10. Valley
1. Southern (By far one of the most entertaining bands in the swac, love their songs selections)
2. JSU ( I had yall boys at the top of my list until yall played SU this year. I just think they slightly outshined yall this year. Great Sound and a beast in the stands.)
3.UAPB (yall have arguably one of the better sounds in the swac, great balance and finesse in their music. Keep up the good work.)
4. AAMU ( It think we stepped up quite a bit this season, but hey thats just me.)
5. Texas Southern (Yall boys fell off this year, but i know that this is only temporary. I see yall moving back up in rankings really soon.)
6. Grambling (As always yall have very entertaining field shows, but some of the songs yall played were a lil "iffy". Overall pretty decent season.)
7. Bama State (Very powerful band; however, think yall have taken another turn for the worse. Yall have the size that band directors dream of .....but i cant understand why you all sound the way you do. Seems like you all don't give a f*ck.)
8. PV (I didn't really pay that much attention to you guys but from what I heard was ok i guess.)
9. MVSU (To me, this year valley was more entertaining than Alcorn.)
10. Alcorn
Uapb...If you actually take into consideration these things listed below then its obvious that M4 is top
1. Intonation
2. Melodic recognition
3. harmony
4. Balance and blend
5. Articulation
6. Dynamic contrast the sound isn't just really soft then instantly loud...there is a mixture
7. Diverse book
Really...What band can you honestly say sounds just hands down better than Uapb...who has a cleaner sound..who is more balanced?
2. Su....They have a nice book with nice arrangements although in my opinion they aren't anywhere near what everyone has been making them out to be...but they are pretty good
3. Jackson...they are so streaky with their performances but when they are on...then they're on. I believe they had a bit of a meltdown as far as sound is concerned starting right at the grambling game but the tnsu game jackson was pretty nice
4. Grambling...people still talk as if gram is just beyond repair..the few clips I heard from the bayou classic didn't sound anywhere near as bad as what some are making them out to be...they have a "decent" size book and their sound has improved but they still have some polishing to do
5. Txsu..they'll battle and go at it with anyone but they just seems as if they try too hard to be loud and the sound suffers because of that
6. AAMU..They just aren't polished as far as sound...it doesn't sound together
7 Alst..although I believe many people on here and in the band world has judged them unfairly and at times people talk about Alst's sound but don't want to comment on other bands that don't sound that much better at times...but it needs a lot of work really it does
8. Valley...they didn't sound horrible but its not together...Tubas are nice though
9. Alcorn took a step back this year. They was alright last season but this season I don't know whats going on...
Historically, Jackson State and Southern have the premiere bands in the SWAC. These two band programs have consistently maintain a superior standard of excellence. I would like to see all the bands in the SWAC raise there standards year after year. The qualty of each program should demish just a program gets smaller or larger. Each band should maximize the potential it has from year to year. This is not the case from what I have seen for years. Furthemore, the quality of the musicians who are offered scholarships should consistently get better and the teaching should get better and better.
Honestly, it is very hard for me rank the band programs in the SWAC because these bands are not consistent from week to week and year to year.
Let's consistently raise our standards.

Every band in the swac has had years when they weren't what they are usually...ALL BANDS..its just that many people let the bands popularity cloud whats really going on thats all
JSU - Overall to me the best sounding band game in and game out powerwise and clarity....Field show not really that much different than previous years...but always gave a good showing no matter who they battled
SU - I loved their new refurbished sound....nice blend of power and clarity....trumpets lacking powerful screamers like years before, but overall cleaned up from mistakes of last year
TxSU - great sound....the year just didn't go as they planned with the hurricane and all....but still a great showing when they did get to battle
AlaSU - biggest disappointment coming into the season....325 horns but sloppy arse sound....lost 1/3 of their horns and got some of their clarity back...brought back together late in the season...i hope they can get back to '06 caliber AlaSU
AAMU - eh......nothing really impressed me bout them this year....overall nice sound tho
PV - focused on being powerful early in the season and let that be their downfall....but i like their sound
UAPB - i see em trying to get back some power.....they betta get somemore bones to combate with the rest of the band....i did hear individuals in many of their sections moreso than the section itself
Alcorn - huge step up from last year....still not fully altogether as a band....sections stick out (baritones)....
Valley - didn't see em...
place em in any order IDC..I just know these were the top programs in the SWAC this season....GSU and AAMU were pretty good from what I saw also..TXSU had their times to me..everybody else um..:( YEA.
