2009 LA Bands Awards(Unofficial)

Now that the marching season has come and gone and we prepare for the parade and developmental season, I just want to know what bands you think deserve an award for these categories. Remember, this is just an opinion poll so choose how you feel. You can also choose the same band for different categories. However you want to do it, lets see what you think.Best Big BandBest Small BandBest Overall BandMost Improved bandBand with best soundBand with best drillsBand to Watch out for next Marching Season

  • I look at it this way, the majority speaks on what the majority has heard... therefore the Majority Ruling stands
  • Best Big Band - (St.Aug)
    Best Small - (Peabody)
    Best Overall - (St.Aug)
    Most improved - (Washington Marion)
    Best Sound -(St.Martinville)
    Best Drill - (Southwood)

Watch for Peabody to have a great year in fall 2010, they will be bigger, better, and uncut!!

    Honorable mention(Washington Marion)(McDonough #35)
  • Big Band-St. Martinville(trophies to prove it)
Best Small Band- Tough call but W-M by way of them placing ahead of Peabody a couple times this year, also Baker placed ahead of W-M in Baton Rouge when they caught the green and gold on a bad day, but you know how hard it is to win in BR against a BR band.
    Best Overall- Again, St. Martinville
Most Improved: W-M(Got better and better as the year went on and was scary at their own botb.)
Best Sound: St. Martinville(All I can say is Pretty Wings)
Best Sound:(Small) W-M by virtue of their upper brass balancing well with lower brass.
Best Drills: Peabody does some real innovative stuff. I give them the nod here. Beau chene and Northwest also did some creative things this year. They tie at second.
Band to Watchout for Next Year: St. Martinville and Carroll will be back, but to me, the only difference between them and bands like Washington-Marion and Peabody and even upstart Jeanerette, was size. So I think those three bands will be hard to beat next marching season.

I'm in agreement with the N. O. bands take. I don't know why they don't compete with the rest of the state's bands, so its hard to include them in a "best of" category based on a clip here and there. I'm not knocking them, but I would love to see them compete with the best of the rest of the state.

  • Man, I hope you're not referring to me. I gave you guys props. I got a lot of love for Peabody, but nobody ran you down when you chose Peabody as your best small band. This is an opinion poll and I don't think I was disrespectful in my ratings. Matter of fact I don't think anyone has been disrespectful or are "hating" on anyone. I know you're making reference to WM, and I even think you guys got robbed at Northwest, but I made my call based on all the botbs. I also thought Baker was great this year. It was close, but man, thats my opinion. If your post is not in reference to mine then I apologize and you can disregard all of this, but if it is, dude, I'm not changing my mind.

I've said my piece and given my opinion, but for those who try downing Peabody and talk about we're not this and we're not that... But when you get opinions from others who have seen and aren't alums just being biased or just have too much pride in their school/program(which we all see pretty often)and you still get that same positive response,it kinda shows me that those naysayers are nothing more than haters...And one of our main haters is a certain band who has finally gotten a taste of victory in years(NAMELY OVER US!) Just wanted to put something all yours minds

  • Don't you think thats kinda like the pot callin the kettle black? I'm affiliated with the band and i can assure you when they were preparing for the game against y'all, neither the director nor the director's assistants were saying anything about how sorry anybody was. The students from both Peabody and WM jaw jack back and forth all the time. its a spirited rival, and I don't think it would be if there wasn't some sort of mutual respect between them. Students will run their mouths to each other. I'm not saying they should be, but its going to happen. As for your comment about living off a legacy, I actually think you're right to a degree. The bd tells them that all the time. he refers to some of them as "freeloaders living off a table thats already been set." But we're all working to change that. The fact that you don't respect WM is ok. I know we respect Peabody whether the students will admit it or not. We wouldn't prepare so hard if we didn't. I promise and I'm not trying to change the purpose of this thread, but if you knew what WM went through over the past four years, you wouldn't be saying you don't respect them because they've had to battle through way too much during that time. Simply put, the fact they were able to be competitive at all this soon is a miracle. BTW, you're right. Mediocrity should not be praised but progression in the face of adversity should be.

No I am not referring to you,if someone attempted to come at me sideways about picking Peabody I wouldn't entertain it,because as far as I'm concerned we're the best band of our size WM is getting praise for finally reaching a decent staus but I didn't even touch basis on that all I have to say about that is mediocrity shouldn't be rewarded nor praised.Although I am happy they are trying to come up but all in the same don't think for a second 1 year in several you've actually won that makes you better and I don't want nor need you to change your mind I give respect and props when earned and they get none from me for a lack of earning any,I do however respect the old WM from Gladney's days that's all.. Not a confrontation but you assumed so I took the liberty of setting he record straight especially of all the bands we go at it with we get props yet little, messy WM always got somethin to say and swear they're the best..better than us at that, and it's your opinion and didn't object to your opinion;it's not my place to do so everyone is entitled to one;WM is living off of a legacy that is no more
