A question about GSU

I read comments alot about GSU having rather 'poo' arrangements...(arranged supposedly by the students that go there?) My question is how much better do YOU think GSU would sound/be with a PROFESSIONAL arranger on staff? I understand that, plain and simple, if you dont know the music- you just dont know the music and its not going to sound any better..But how much better do you think they would be with one? As far as having a better book, and even sounding a little better..

ALSO if that option is more BENEFICIAL for GSU, then why dont they take that route and just hire one? Im not sure about the specifics of getting hired at an university, but im pretty sure there are TONS of great arrangers that would help out...

anyone?.....(and excuse me if this comes off a little "off", but its just a wondering thought in my head)

  • Arrangements can only do so much (no smack intended)

And you cant just go "hire" anyone at a university.....not even a janitor. That is government money you talkin about.....EVERYTHING is accounted for and has to be processed. Not to mention its the administration that has the power to hire ppl, not band directors.
  • Trust me it wasn't the arrangements 99% of the time, the biggest thing that haunted the band, and i say haunted because it's in the past and it's a new season: many people simply didn't memorize the music like they supposed to do, people were inverting chords and making up parts, that will kill an arrangement instantly. As long as everyone is playing musical and with style you can still get away with a bad arrangement and when i say bad arrangement i mean voicing, key and other elements. So the arrangements are not the blame, people not knowing their music and doing what the hell they want on it WAS the blame. Grambling doesn't have to hire quote on quote chief arranger, all the directors can arrange, plus alumni over the U.S. constantly sends the staff arranged for the band and also if you seen all the music in that library aka the vault, you don't have to write one old school song because every thing is already in Grambling's library, i not many songs that i have heard most bands play that's not in Grambling's library. Just use your resources. I'm happy to say it's happening now, sad to say it didn't happen much when i marched and was around but o well lol. As long as it's happening now.
  • i really hope yall have a good year
  • Seems people are really wanting Grambling to get it together this year......I'm praying that it happens and from what ive heard so far things are on the right track..just like RJ stated, its not the arrangments, however some arrangements are a lil questionable at times, but if the music is not practiced and perfected before taking it out of the band room, any band will not sound good. things are on the up and up in 2010.....in about 4 weeks, all will see and hear for themselves and whether good or bad, the comments will pour in by the minutes...Good Luck to every HBCU Band this season...
  • agreed
GSU has the potential to be just as good as they were in the past but only if they act upon that potential. and if they continue to do what everyone says they are doin, then they wont have to worry about a bad season. Good luck for SWAC!

Yes! I really am waiting...Some of the GSU people have been saying good things are happening. Hopefully its not a "Bush" statement. I cant wait to see GSU back, Full throttle, like they were back in my day when i used to go the every game.

  • Don't sleep on all student arrangements...I've seen and played through scores written by students that would $#!+ on SOME colleges' full-time arrangers.
  • EXACTLY. Notice the main ones that criticize student arrangers probably can't arrange at all. The more seasoned arrangers of today were once student arrangers.
