  • My high school band uses those and the e flat peck horns.
  • That is definitely different. During my senior year, my high school used 2 flugelhorns and 3 mellophones for the marching band. It did kind of balance things out.
  • The sound is very dark on the flugelhorn. PV Sax what made you think of this? I wanted to keep these kinds of things a secret for when i sneak up on other high school bands lol.
  • Well it wasn't much of secret since we did it at my school about 6 years ago!!!! Although I wouldn't have mentioned the e flat peck horns.
  • Well i'm not mentioning anything else lol
  • Besides, unlike Lebron James, you didn't make a huge public announcement about where you are going, so people are going to be caught off guard anyway.
  • Yeah many of my Grambling peeps don't even know where i will be lol

A question to brass specialists in Marching Band
How come we don't see the use of Fluglehorns in Marching Bands these days? I imagine they could add a lot of color to the overall sound of the band,…
  • It has been on my mind for freaking ever.

So I recently decided to look up a few things about the instrument...

I found it interesting that some historians credit the fluglehorn's creation to Adolphe Sax (same dude that created the saxophone), though some historians actually mentioned similar instrumentations that predated Sax's credit.

Knowing this, if I were a BD, I would have liked to see ALL of my sax players double up and march the fluglehorn. I think I developed and infatuation with that horn. It has a VERY dark, fat timbre (which I am a fan of), and is generally pitched in the key of B flat just like the trumpet. So that means it is easy to arrange for.

I think the horn could enhance a band's sound because it can serve as a median between the trumpet section and the mellophone section and could seamlessly compliment both sections.

Interesting thought about the peck horn. I need to read up on that horn too.

  • I can see a SWAC band holding up a section of fluglehorns....while the other band don't know what the hell is going on....

Do you think they could change the art of SWAC arrangements, and the general SWAC sound?
  • Yes it would change both.
