That was a good move for A&M. The MMW did not get better under his leadership. Considering the type funding(scholarships) that is budgeted for that program; it is a gold mine. Let the right person come in there that knows how to run a good program; that band is going to blow up.
If you research and check Yates credentials; it makes you wonder how in the hell was he able to get that position in the first place. The man went from being a Middle School Director to a University. His middle school band sucked. Check it out. The facts don't lie.
At any rate, Good move AAMU, you deserve much better.
@TBoneSuave...............The 'Showband of the South' that you have been lookin' at for the last few years is not what it was back in the early-mid 2000's. Look at the clips from 2003, 2004, and 2005 and then look at how A&M changed dramatically from 2006 and up. Tradition was lost, and I was a part of the beginning of that. I wish the best for AAMU and I hope their new band director can bring them back to what they used to be, if not better.
I just pray that the MMW continues the great success. This band has always been a force to watch out for during the season.
On a brighter note...Yates and staff recruited very well. So a minor set back for major comeback. Scholarships are back this year also. So for those others out there *Warning.
Mr. Yates was a great man had no bad things to say about him. I guess the administration had other ideas nothing more nothing less. BTW rumors will follow...just keep us in your prayer.
John Brown you are a damn joke. I asked you about two years ago your affiliation with the MMW and you got ghost. You mention chapman and say they sucked, but the members there were actually great musicians. I played with them. Look at all of the requirements as posted, he met them. So what is our real beef? You must have been one of the alumni that didn't like him personally versus professionally. You have to face facts IF you are truly MMW then you would really want what's best for the program versus your feelings.
And if that's the Tori I remember you aren't even i your damn section talking about tradition. You definitely contributed to the loss of it. Maybe the death march was lost, or sunshine, or maybe lovely day..... Oh wait all of that is still here. Down on seven and up on eight are still here. Maybe you all should keep family business family business.... Or maybe you're not actually family.

AAMU band director gone
Mr. Yates was not retained as the head band director of Alabama A&M University.
Lol @Steven Sanders. I guess it's time for me to get my grown behind off of this post then. You would think that after all of this time band would be about more than just "Crossin" your section, but I guess some things just won't change, even after the temporary loss of a highly regarded band program(which they are just now getting a new band director for). So, this post is about the loss of a band director for A&M, but you get on here tryin' to knock individuals down like that? Let's stick to the topic at hand, even if it is "Family Business". When has there ever been a secret when stuff like this goes down? People are going to talk, so let them voice their opinion and you voice yours- tactfully.
Well you missed the underlying point but I am glad you brought it up. Band is about learning, having fun, going to practice and showing up to performances. Which you didn't do. So yes it was people like you that cause problems in programs. You didn't do your part to actually contribute you were a leech on our program and now you feel better Yates was let go because you got kicked out. You sucked as a bandsman so you probably suck as an adult. The topic is my band program which you, through your sorry ass ways, tried to inadvertently destroy. Voice your opinion but make sure it isn't biased by you being bitter for being removed from the program for being a lazy sorry excuse for a bandsman.

Thank you, Steven, for reminding me of what I was like as a young, immature, adolescent. I'll admit that I wasn't the best student, however, that is not a reflection of who I am today. I want the best for the program and all I did was voice my opinion and you want to attack me for my immature mistakes that I made over 6 years ago? This is not a matter of me being bitter against anyone. Anyways, this conversation is going nowhere fast, so I'll let you be, before you post anymore ignorance. Besides, if I wanted all of MY business put out to the world, I would have signed up for a Twitter account.
Slow your roll young man. Are you a Yates student? You must be because you are in defense mode. That was your Band Director, so I understand your loyalty, and how much your feelings are hurt from him being fired LOL! But I see where your heart is young man, you love A&M; and you are about supporting know matter how bad the circumstances may be; I get that. But at the same time, you must understand, everybody does not tick like that. You can say what you want about the Band Alumni, that is your opinion, and I really feel that Alumni issues does not have anything to do with Yates personally, that's BS! because at the end of the day, if Yates had have produced a better product on the field, Alumni and most definitely A&M President would have supported. A person gets fired because they were not doing their job; end of story.
