According to bandmaster Derrick K. Yates, filming will begin on August 5 at the start of the band's preseason camp, which will culminate with the first "Battle of the Bands" between the AAMU Band vs. Alabama State University Band in Birmingham, Ala., at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Friday, October 26, the night before the Magic City Classic football game. The agreement will net the program $125,000 over a five-year period, in addition to royalties from online sales. "This is the largest deal made on behalf of The Marching Maroon & White Band," says Yates, adding that part of his vision entails marketing the band program so that it works for itself. "I am truly excited about this deal. It is a major accomplishment for the band program and our great university.” Funds from the deal, says Yates, will be used for musical instruments and a continuous band uniform drive. - Jerome Saintjones
