Advice

Ok....so I'm really in a messed up situation right now. It's been my dream to march in a HBCU band since I was like 6 years old. I came so close to it my senior year, but I got offered a scholarship to a college that doesn't have a marching band. I'm on a full ride, but I truly want to march. I feel like if I don't march in college I am going to regret it for the rest of my life. Other people tell me to let the marching band go, but they can't take my dream and passion away. I have serious thoughts on transferring but the full scholarship is what's stopping me. All I talk about and watch on YouTube is bands. I need some thoughts and/or suggestions on this...I would really appreciate any responses.(I am a freshman at Claflin University, and I'm from South Carolina. I can't march with SCSU because music majors can not march with them. I don't want to go to SCSU because of the accreditation issues.)

  • And its like what if you say ima follow my dream to march in a hbcu band and u don't make it....then what? Try out first. Make sure you have made the band. Then go from there. You have to make the band first in college.

  • not trying to be arrogant, but there is no such thing as 'not making the band' in my head. I was playing trumpet for SCSU, and I went through freshman band camp before I had to quit.

  • Coming from someone who had to let dreams go, remember what is important in the long run. When I attented ULL my biggest focus was joining a certain frat (can't say the name)....I had everything set up for it...I had family in it...I was cool with everybody in the chapter...they treated me like I was pretty much "In there" and all i had to do was make it through the "process"....Well, before I could get on line, I had to make a career move and switch schools...It sucked because I had to leave everything I had built at ULL behind, but 2yrs later I have my degree and I work at a chemical plant with the potential to make 6 figures a year...Had I stayed at ULL for the sake of joining the frat, right now I would be broke and still in school...We go to college for the education so we'll have a better chance at a successful life in the real world, we don't go to college for the extracurricular activities, because if you don't plan on being a professional musician, the 4 yrs u marched in college mean NOTHING in the real world.

  • Education > Band.

Idk the details about SCSU's band (music majors can't march?) but its not the end of the world. Take what you have now and explore your options while you progress. If that's really your dream you'll exhaust every option and cover every base to make it come true. I wanted to march in college but going into my jr year in hs I played violin, so I picked up a horn and taught MYSELF, auditioned, made it, and marched from F08-F11.

So its possible. If you're passionate about anything, it should come naturally to you. So my advice to you is to either make that shit happen or give your all and fail. Good luck.

  • I don't understand why music majors at claflin can't march with SCSU band? Anyway, I am a music major. I'm thinking about music education but we'll see. My future goal actually is to perform though. I just don't understand why education and band couldn't come together like I've been hoping for.
  • Well, if you're trying to be a musician for real, than see about getting some scholarships and grants for a HBCU...if not, it won't be the end of the world...you can still be a great musician without being in a HBCU marching band...for example, Trombone Shorty....a BEAST and never went to college...he did get formal training though at NOCCA, but was killin' it well, before he was even 10.

  • Hey man "Choose Jackson State, I did," we're building a good music program down here. What's your major man we good at science and technology. The only problem is financial aid, take care of that like two months ahead of time. Come check us out man, most important thing is your career though, put that first and then the band. I promise you won't regret joining the "BOOM."

  • By the way we have a great jazz band man, come on down check us out and see if you like it or not. One thing about music degrees is that it's not many jobs out there for it. The government is cutting allot of funding across the country public school music and art programs.

  • Lol. I feel u there...I play the piano too....self-taught. U need to figure out exactly what it is that u wanna focus on and decide where to go based on what school would better suit your musical needs as well as financial needs.
