I was jus thinkn bout this the other day. Like the DCI bands but for showstyle artistry n mastery. Funding...i say put Don P n charge. He'd get the money flowing!
i hate my city now!!!!! everybody eles got mass all star bands and we dont.. how we used to have the biggest all star band in the south.. now we aint got diddly squat.. whats up dallas funky town??? what happed?
The Problem is the start up and shutdown times for these bands. some do it in the summer, some do it between after football season.. some do it in the spring...
. but it can happen and it was mentioned once before. there could be league similar to DCI if it continues and is funded properly.. yep..
DCI and This new upstart of All-star/Alumni bands are two totally different monsters. The latter one being the hardest to pull off, getting a group of 100+ black people from 1 city, from ages 17-30+ is very difficult, schedules come into play, people have families, and careers jobs. Then they're mostly playing on affordable student horns of their own or borrowing from the local high schools. It's crazy bruh. While DCI you have pretty much the best of the best in the country (in the 17-24 corp band age group which have less time contraints)who have auditioned for small positions in these bands, and these bands focus mainly on various advanced skill building to give these bands professional sounds, they play on pro instruments, and mainly focus on a small number of selections for their field shows, and the rest warm-ups.
From what I've seen from the last couple of events with the Alumni/All-star bands their really haven't been that good of promoting for these events either(Being that no one I know outside of the band community knew anything about it, and I didn't know until recentl), it seems like promoter are mainly focusing on core audiences(bandsmen) when they should be trying to go for the non-bandsmen , and attempting to sell as many tickets as possible so they can continue this great thing.
If you're going to talk about field shows, and stuff, that's going to increase the pressure and more needed practice time. It's also harder considering the lack of young people being interested in band these day. The band community is like a pyramid, you need good band programs on all levels for each other to succeed or the others will collapse.(elementary, middle, high school, college)
It can happen, just very difficult, and there needs to be better communication, more devotion and more structure on behalf of the BD's, bandsmen, promoters, band media, etc.
I could picture this.. but at the same time DCI is competition on the field.. im sure these All star bands have little want for marching during this point of the year.. lol
and folks are going to want a "winner" to be declared and that gets crazy.. can't have a competition without a winner and rules would need to be layed out.. Im sure it would end up being a tedious process but manageable still.
and guy talking bout Dallas... I've heard word that there were potential practices for an All-star band... just sayin'.. *whistles*

Well, I hope it does take off. There is talk of doing this next year, at least the few directors I've talked to.
This would be great though if it takes off into its own league like DCI. Get band uniforms for HUMB..lol or
instrument sponsorship from King or something. I'm definitely looking into that on my end.
