I was comparing the overall look of both types of bands. both of them start at the same time, both of them have age requirement, both compete in competions. DCI is already very well established. All - Star bands are still evolving. Do yall think in the future that all-star bands will be established like DCI but in a F.U.B.U. type of way?

  • let's make the council..
    now what then?
    lol
  • make it so !!!
  • Myself and my Psi LB talked about something like this back in November of 08. We even started a plan to secure funding and instruments that is currently under way. I think it would be a fantastic Idea for this to happen. Think about it:

Each All-Star group sponcer a summer BOTB and earn points leading up to a large one with a Pay-Per-View audience. Or something along that line. For ever city that has an All-Star Band, Get them formally incorporated and establish a governing body to create rules and guidelings that everyone can agree to! This can happen next summer!!!
  • Now would this go beyond the High School level? As far as age?

Are All-Star Bands becoming our version of DCI ?

  • Well that would have to be decided by the council. DCI ages out at 21 but to do it for what I described would be interesting. Not only would high school age limits would be concerned but what would be the youngest age? Here we have junior highs that start in the 7th grade so to add kids that age would not be a good idea. Personally I'd like the ages to be high school sophmores(age 16) to 20 years old. But that's me!

  • the problem with that is the college peeps may try to out the high schoolers..
    don't you think?
  • No not really. That doesn't happen with DCI and responsible All-Star directors wouldn't let that happen. I'm not talking about a bunch of folks just throwing something together but structuring it like DCI with winter and spring practices. Then dedicating a week to put together the show, then hit the tour so to speak. Like I said earlier we have paperwork filed and currently securing funding for instruments, uniforms, travel to off set the personal cost. Now that would be a problem with summer band camps but like I said that's something to talk about.

  • Personally I hate all star bands and you'll are falling victim to the DCI bug like they're band gods when in all actuality they don't even acknowledge our style of bands. All star bands personally to me will be the downfall of SHOW STYLE bands because honestly if these kids would put the effort into their highschool bands that they put into these allstar bands we wouldn't be having these problems within the band communit PERIOD.......
  • That's a fair, honest opinion! But I care to differ on your statement from this perspective. The downfall of showstyle can't be the results of all-star or community bands but the lack of teaching by the directors of those bands. Some schools have bad programs and their students are not involved in all-star ensembles. DCI will not be the pattern for such a tour but an example of structure and organization. But you raise a concern about the lack of effort among the student. That is an issue I think would be enhanced by groups like the ones I'm talking about. It's no different that going to a summer band camp at a university!

  • not really to answer the question, because as stated before, DCI is in one way or another a LEAGUE......sort of the NBA or NFL of drum & bugle........BUT it is possible if approched the right way.....

before i came down here to school, i had been in the madison scouts indoor corps for 2 years and did the cavaliers indoor for a few months.....and one thing that ive noticed is that high schoolers are of the most importance for the simple fact that though DCI is a competitive league, it is also a learning experience..... your jeff queens, casey brohards, scott johnsons, etc started as tennagers in this highly skilled league and grew into some of the greatest percussionists ever.

no i dont believe DCI musicians are "gods",but i cannot deny their elite skill. when i hear the blue devils, phantom regiment, etc. play a piece of art, i cant help but have the thought in my head that "this is how it was meant to be played"...
