Are we to blame for the downfall of our own Marching style?

An Instructor at LSU asked a group of HS students, what websites do they like to get on.  When hey said Bandhead.org, he insisted that Bandhead.org is not a real band website and is full of negative stuff.

Band directors are displeased and some have pulled away from  the Show band style because of it.. With that said, I was asked "What are you going to do about it, Book?"

Apparently a large percentage of the bandhead population are members of bandhead.org

but  even as an administrator here, I can not force  folks to be  positive about bands. but on my part. I only can assure that image of our bands be displayed greatly through the content I provide.  If you all do the same, maybe folks would see this site as a more  credible site..

Being a bandhead is more than critiquing bands,& smack talk. it's a Culture built around the reputation of our bands as well as the experience within.  We discuss the similarities and differences of our bands to differentiate the Great from the Good and the  Good from The Bad. Out of that comes smack talk. and other foolishness . some is all in fun, others are more serious  otherwise, Those who haven't experienced it or are witnesses of it, wont understand it

Like Veteran Soldiers We know that everything is not perfect it's why we are here to discuss it all.. This site represents many truths about bands and who we are as members/ Alumni / staff/

at this point.. I don't know what to say...

  • How is a website to blame for the way THESE BAND DIRECTORS are SUPPOSED to conduct the way their bands work? Sure enough some folks do get out of hand with some of the smack but you can't stop a person from expressing their opinion.  Seems to me these bd's need to stop blaming a website for the way their bands look and sound.  This website has nothing to do with it.  If you need to vent or get mad at someone, be mad at yourself for producing the product of a program that you have.
  • how you blame a website, its on the people on the website, nd where you think they get it from
  • Hell No! If directors would teach and lead instead of letting the students run their program and quit trying to do what the next band does then things would/will get better!
  • theyre just using this as an excuse for their lack of ability as a leader and a teacher.
  • Sounds like the students are enjoying show style "traditional" marching, than rather the style at their HS....Sounds like a jealously issue to me.
  • this is the most craziest bull ive ever heard in my life. u cant blame a website for the "downfalls" ur having. im like u @Philharmonic, some of these directors are just sitting ducks not teaching the students anything. instead of them leading the students the students are leading them, if not leading themselves...smh
  • wow....blaming a website for how a band sounds....bands have sounded terrible WAYYYYYYYY before bandhead started getting big. The only thing they can say is it exposes bands to other band style, which maybe out of their ability...i.e. a high school band trying to play a JSU or SU arrangment and failing miserably....but then you blame the website for exposing them to that style....WTF?????

As Mr.Leonard Giles, Sr., former BD of the FVSU BMMB back when it was a BEAST, said to the current edition of the BMMB

"There are no bad bands, only bad band directors."

  •  Its not like Bandhead is the only website. There is the 5thquarter forums, SWACfans, and others. As much as I would love to see some more positivity out of Bandhead.org's users sometimes we all know

And that's the problem. People will forever see Bandhead.org as a site of negativity as long as it continues and even after. It's record is tainted by negativity in some people's eyes. Going as far as to say Bandhead.org is responsible? Naw, its only a website where some people who have something in common ( the love for show style marching bands) come and be entertained.  Its like blaming a record store for the downfall of a genre of music.

  • all the school band membership is down... in the words of master p... it aint my fault

  • I don't believe the issue at hand is really about how the website is tied to bad sounding bands. I believe the problem is the alarming amount of high school kids coming on this site and talking about the most idiotic things and believe that it is music.  I see that a lot of these kids have found a community where they can pass on information to each other. Then that information runs onto their younger peers who are becoming musically illiterate by the minute.  I don't wanna blame the site at all, but I do put most of the blame on the members who aren't setting a good standard for them to follow.  For example, I seen a thread on this site dedicated to who can scream higher, who has the "most smashingest band," and who "blows harder." Things like that just can't sit right for any of the musicians who stumble across topics like those. Nothing wrong with smack talk or the comparisons of bands, but when some people come on here and throw musicality out of the window is down right disappointing.
