Band Directors who are predators are usually using alcohol and other drugs and in many cases have a lack of emotional/self discipline. These types of directors usually love the music and the high school enviroment its like a priest who is a pedophile a perfect cover being the church. This has to stop this sexual crime does happen to often to our kids/students. First, the band community has to call the crime what it is a RAPE of a minor, meaning even if the minor was willing its still RAPE if you are an adult. Second we have to be willing to turn these Directors in who RAPE students. We have all known about or seen with our own eyes directors who are too Hands ON with students and you knew his touching was inappropriate but we didn't speak up. Third, as a community we have to build and maintain a strong adult booster club that will be the adult eyes and ears / moral compass for our band students. Predators will resist a strong booster club. Good band directors will welcome them. Rapist in the band room will not only destroy a students life but will destroy entire band programs.
At my own high school it was happening. Not with the head director, but with his friends who played with him in high school/college who would come to help
Does anyone know is it the Band Director or the School's Principal/Administration responsibility to have director's friends who come out to help (volunteers) do a background check or get approval from the school district before these volunteers can work with the band.

At my school, McMain, which is under Orleans Parish as well, we have a very strick policy on persons whom come into contact with students. Everyone must be cleared by Orleans Parish (including parents whom want to chaperone and walk with their own children) before they can even come around the band. I am not sure of all circumstances at McD35, but to me it seems as though they are able to do things that others schools cannot.
In any school, when anyone (including parents) comes to the front office, their license is usually scanned and if any sex offense is found, then they can not even venture out of the office. They can only pick up their child. If they want to volunteer, they have to register and do a background check.
