A big band obviously has unlimited possibilities on the field as far formations with out the sound being compromised. You want enough in each section to have balance. As long as every on is playing to full potential; a smaller band say 50 to 75pc can sound just as good as a bigger band. Samuell (Dallas) for example, was half the size of some of those bands at the battle of the bands last year but produced the same sound. As long as their is balance across the band then the size does not matter.
yeah bro a high school band should be about 70 up but these days a lot of bands from texas and out of state can barely get 40 but some bands are lucky to have feeder schools that have good programs.but size dont matter as long as everybody look the same and play.it doesnt matter what size you are .think about lasod them boyz was a beast .i witnessed bigger bands get blowed out by 30 and 40 piece bands.SIZe dont matter at all.dont under estimate smaller bands because they can prove you wrong
size doesnt always matter
my band has less than 50 members at the moment
but we stay on point in every perspective.
everyone can read, play, march, chant, etc.
IMO the more people you have in your band, the more problems you're going to get.
and when i say that, it doesnt mean i dont want my band to expand. trust me...i do recruit often...I just make sure
everyone that joins the band doesnt cause corruption.

band size
jux askin in your opinions how big shoul a band be how big should your d-lines be be specific like nomber of trumbets,bones,tenors,cymbals,etc.
Now, those are some gr8 numbers!!! A band director would love to have that type instrumentation on a regular consistency, especially if they're all real musicians!!!

The sections should be
brass=50%
Woodwinds=40%
Percussion=10%
No matter how big the band is it should follow that ratio.
25% trumpets
about 14 % midds 6/10 f horns 4/10 baritones
about 11% trombones
about 8% tubas
and about 14% percusion yeah i know it adds up to 97%
percentage based on 144 piece band
Percussion is better heard not seen
