I know it's been mentioned before probably but the old heads always come out and say how "back in their day [this and that] didn't ever used to happen" and how much better everyone was for it.
I'm starting to see a trend where the younger students are not looking up to the upperclassmen as a way to learn but as rather an obstacle in their paths.
I could understand if you have proven yourself with certain criteria as compared to some who have not. but to say some things against those who have done the criteria you've met and THEN SOME is just something I can't understand.
Now this is not to say anything about everyone of them, because there are still plenty who will own up to themselves and say "can you help me with this or that" which is what brought me to make this topic.
how come we are so afraid [as a general mass] in bands today to really go out and seek help?

oldheads should lead by example and stop being so negative. How are you guys going to haze somebody when you dont have your stuff together? I dont really blame crabs for standing up against the sorry oldheads. You guys need to lift up the freshmen, take them by their hand and show them what needs to be done. I know it sound likes babying but hey whats been going n the past 10 years isnt working. oldheads should all be phenomenal musicians if they plan to give somebody instructions.
Alumni- If you have nothing good to say about the program, stay the hell away. Unless you are donating to the band, shut up even if they do have a not so good showing. Come around and lift the band's moral up. Ask the directors if there is anything you can do. better yet if you know so much about band and music, get a degree in it and teach it.

After a period of time, the slacking off becomes the norm, and the high standard is some magical concept that "the oldhead just bytch about". There's a rift between the people that busted their arses to make these bands what they are, and the people that just want to get by on the bands' names. Guilt and pride keep those people from seeking help from those that know.
Not every current member is like that, but it's a noticeable difference from 10 or 20 years ago...even with the "powerhouses."
We can talk about things on this website about how things USED to be, and how crabs today are this and that. But for the MOST part, it's ALL talk.
So we can throw our grown folk temper tantrums about the way today's band is, compared to 10-20 years ago. But like it's been said, if you ain't a BD, or a "contributing" Alum to your alma mater...but insist instead on going to your old school to bash the current band for not being what you want it to be, then you aren't a part of the solution. Matter of fact, you just might be a main source of the problem.
Don't get me wrong, it's okay to vent your dissatisfaction and offer constructive criticism here and there because we love our bands and we love the craft. But as current and former bandsmen, we ALL know what it takes to make a difference for your band (blood, sweat, and tears)...and we ain't giving that by just sitting behind a computer screen talking about it.
If you want to make a difference THAT badly, then go make a difference.

(Side note. Not all Upperclassmen/Old Heads behave this way but a larger amount is guaranteed to.)
