Bands Designed for Battle or for Show

In the SWAC (as far as I understand it), the bands are "supposedly" built to be battle tested.  But IMHO, not all 10 bands are built for battling.  There are a few that stand out more like "showcase bands" than "battling bands".

 

In your opinion, how would you compare a battle ready band to a showcase band?  What are the pros and cons of each?

 

Could you classify your favorite band(s) into one category or the other if you had to? 

 

Try it out...doesn't have to be strictly SWAC either.

    over a look..the unifomity of the whole band. missing spats isht like dat.



    4. fieldshow as a whole.

    Had to fix dat...da isht sound like a regular football game in the SWAC to me tho...

    For Me, i say the difference between battle and showcase bands is that battle bands have a "kill my opponent" mentality, while the showcase has a "put on a great show" mentality. Now, that doesn't mean that the band in one category doesn't have tendencies of the other category, just that the tendencies of the one i put them in overrides the other.

    Battle Bands in the SWAC:
    JSU
    SU
    TxSU
    AlaSU

    Showcase Band:
    PV
    AAMU
    GSU
    MVSU
    Alcorn
    UAPB

    Battle Bands in the SIAC:
    Miles

    Showcase Bands in the SIAC:
    Fort Valley
    Albany
    Morehouse
    Clark-Atlanta
    Benedict
    Tuskeegee

    Good synopsis but i would put A&M in the Battle Band Category and definitely not the Showcase Band.

    Yeh they were a "Tweener" to me.....

    but the way i kinda analyzed it was do the bands focus more on the stands (battle) or the field (showcase).....it's hard for the SWAC cause most can do both very well

    A&M has always been boring on the field but them mf's handle their bizz in them stands. lol

    09 was a bit more balanced from what i remember seeing....then again, ion remember much

    Yes I agree with that SWAC list. The ultimate example of "Battle vs. Showcase" was the 2008 Battle of the Bands in TNSU's gym. SU clearly came into their gym to murder, rip apart and feed their scraps to the wolves, while TNSU was doing more of a showcase similar to their FAMU showcase in Atlanta. In these type of matchups, you will see some interesting songs being thrown against each other:
