BATTLING...........

Now Guys, we all like to do it because its fun. We love to go in the parking lot and go back and forth but whats the real purpose of it and how do you determine who wins a battle? Heres my take on it. Feel free to comment:1. A battle is between Bands, not debate teams. I believe that if another band calls you out and you argue, try to fight, or curse at the other band, you automatically lose. Groups should be disciplined enough to go back and forth without saying a single word to each other.2. Since a battle is between bands, it should be musically based. Power is fine but just because one band is louder than the other doesnt make them a winner. It is a battle: an unscheduled challenge initiated musical contest between one or more bands. The goal should be musicality, not just power.3. Drum Sectionals and other sections should be allowed to battle if time permits but only one at a time. If a drum battle is going on and a trombone player jumps out of line playing then that shows lack of control. Individuals should never play by themselves without their section.4. Dance teams and flags are a part of the battle too but who determines which team was the best? All they are doing is 8 counts back and forth.Any comments or observations?

  • i agree with most of what you said.

This generation of bands have become about power and who can play the highest. But I believe the all around goal should be balance and blend, what a band should be striving for. At the same time, everyone likes power, so be as powerful as you can be with a good sound, the characteristic sounds of the instruments.

And can we please get a new reperoire of songs. I'm so tired of battles being with Neck, Hay, and Torture. Something new guys.

I can't stand drums, so I don't pay attention to drum battles, but if I do, what I look for is precision and playing together. Not trying to beat the H$%% out of the drum like most of them do.

Dance teams are all about being together, so when you battle 8 counts, the object should be looking the same as each other, as together as possible. Over exaggerating the dances and moves.
  • well drumline wise, u determine it by who plays the most rudiments and th attack of the rudiments u kno?? or the playin ability not just who can dance the best thats not wat its about its about choppin and risk control.
  • You know what bothers me at a battle: when one single drummer tries to initiate their own battle without their section. Theres no way that one person can take out an entire drumline by themselve, and even if they are that dam good, it makes the rest of the drum section look sorry because they cant do it as a section.

If you can solo that damn good, then I say go to UIL Solo and Ensemble. If you come back with a medal, then you are a bad ass mf
  • amen to that!!!!!!!!
  • Aww man, why can't u stand percussion????
