Besides performing, what else makes your band special?

Besides performing, what else makes your band special to you? We all know that it all band members have to have some type of relationship with one another. ALso there are tons of customs Im sure your band have that makes you unique: whether its how you dismiss rehearsal, start rehearsal, travel etc.

Id like to hear some of them and matter of fact I will start.

At Austin, we do tons of trips. One in particular is when we go to the Rodeo in March to perform.  Every year, band members make me ride the mechanical bull and laugh as Im tossed all over the place.  Also the first week in January is SOnic Boom Week. Its a week full of recruitment trips and festivities. At the end of the week, we have a huge Picnic where we have more food than a Rich Ethiopian and awards. Then the next day, we go out of town somewhere.

So tell some of yours. Some things you really look forward to.

  • One thing that I'm looking forward to is I have created the FIRST (to the best of my knowledge) HISD MS Latin Jazz Band. We play salsa, cumbia, cha cha, but also traditional jazz tunes. Looking forward to their performances in the spring.

  • Well, I just graduated from High School but some of the things I liked about my band were the Tradition, the freedom, and the musicality.

My band is from the north so Tradition is a VERY big deal. We had Senior Traditions, pranking traditions, songs we sang before every meal at camp, Drum Major traditions, we also even take a trip to Disney World every 4 years.

My Director kept everything free if you will. You never had to do anything you didn't want to do if you had a choice. Also, he always took people's ideas and opinions. Someone actually drew the design for one of our show shirts.

Lastly, the musicality was the best for me. Not my Senior year but my Freshman year. Back when my band was actually GOOD. everythng we played, we played it from the heart; even scales. We played Band of Brothers my Junior year. Best thing ever because everybody played it so musically and we listened to each other.

All in all what made my band special to me was that I felt like I was home whenever I was there. We were always there for one another no matter what, and the musicality we all shared.

  • i am in my senior year at Mckinley but in my sophmore year i started up the Multi tenor section in the drum line. it was receved with some opposition but last year alot of the alumni and southern alumni ahe made comments about how they like the way our drumline sounds now. Plus we are the only high school band, that marches like southern, that has quads.
