CHURCH RAISED MUSICIANS

I personally wasn't raised in a family that went to church every Wednesday and Sunday.  I have met a lot of great musicians and the one thing I couldn't help but notice was that the better musicians I have come encounter with...majority were raised in church!! You know how you can be walking through the music department and there is always somebody in the piano room going to work.  There's usually group of girls and gay guys singing...lol! Naw I’m joking! really I’m not..lol! And they always have a great ear, which I think comes from playing music in so many different keys...Which is what you can get from gospel! ANYWAYZ......

My question to Marchingsport musicians who weren't raised in a church rich family...Do you think you would be a better musician if you were?......

And for those of you who were musically inspired by church...Do you feel being raised in a church is what made you a better musician?...oh and how did church benefit your musicianship?

  • I also think the school choir helps a lot too. But I don't think the whole church thing makes you a better musician
  • CHURCH MUSCIANS HAVE YEARS AND YEARS WORTH OF WEEKLY CHURCH HOURS BUILT UP WITHIN THOSE HOURS FOR A CHURCH MUSICIAN THEY WERE SPENT ON REHERSALS, CLINICS OR PERFECTING WITH FELLOW MUSICIANS, AND SPENT IN ACTUAL SERVICE OR WHAT YOU MAY CALL PERFORMING/PERFORMANCE OR FOR MARCHING THE SHOW/GAME TIME. BUT THIS ATTRIBUTE MAKES AND DEVELOPS THE LEVEL OF MUSICIANSHIP TO A HIGH OR EXTRAORDINARILY GOOD SKIIL, THEN AGAIN YOU HAVE CHURCH MUSCIANS THAT GO THROUGH THIS WHO MUSICALITY ISNT STRONG AT ALL, SO I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF BEING A CHURCH MUSICIAN MY WHOLE LIFE, FROM THEN ALL THE DEDICATED CHURCH TIME THE MUSICIANSHIP AND PRACTICES WILL FOLLOW YOU HOME, TO SCHOOL WHERREVER ELSE WITH HOME COMES PRACTICING FOR PERFECTION, WITH SCHOOL COMES JAZZ BAND, MARCHING BAND, CHOIRS YOU KNOW WHAT THEY CALL EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES FOR US CHURCH MUSICIANS JUST ANOTHER WAY TO DO WHAT WE LOVE AND THATS MUSIC. BEING A CHURCH MUSICIAN FOR ME EXPOSED ME TO MANY DIFFERNT INSTRUMENTS AND MANY DIFFERENT SKILLED MUSICIANS WHICH DEVELOPED A HUNGER INSIDE OF ME TO BE BETTER THAN ALL THESE COLD @ $ $ MUSICIANS ON THESE INSTRUMENTS AND PLAY WHAT THEY PLAY BETTER THAN THEM AND PLAY ANOTHER INSTRUMENT AND COME TO THEM LIKE LOOK YOU MADE ME WANNA PLAY GUITAR I TAUGHT MYSELF HOW TO PLAY IT AND LOOK I KNOW HOW TO PLAY ALL THESE SONGS BUT GUESS WHAT NOW I CAN PLAY PAINO TO.. BASICALLY FOR ME IT MADE ME HUNGRY TO BE ABLE TO SKILLFULLY PLAY ANY INSTRUMENT IN WHICH I CONQUORED THAT EARLY BECAUSE OF BEING A CHURCH MUSICIAN. THIS WOULD BE DIFFERENT FOR SOMEONE WHO DIDNT GROW UP IN CHURCH TO GET EXPOSURE TO INSTRUMENTS WOULD REQUIRE PARENTS BUYING THEM OR USING SOMEONES OLD ONE FINDING A TEACHER AND ALL OR THE CHILD TEACHING THEMSELVES BUT GROWING UP PLAYING IN CHURCH TAKES A LOT OF THOSE NECESSITITES FOR BEING ABLE TO TRAIN A MUSICIAN WITHOUT A MUSICAL ENVIORNMENT AWAY
    • I feel that. I was raised in the church as well....I'm a PK! Lol but Yes playing in churches help exploit those different and difficult key signatures and scale improvisation, but it's only to your work ethic to take all of that in logically...some church musicians never get the full beauty of what the foundation of music theory, and aspects such and in turns can only improv, and or try to interpret what is being heard but don't fully gain what is necessary. But I'm living proof that gospel intel can make almost the hardest lick edible. The hardest arrangement writeworthy of your calibur depimdimg on how far you are. The most complex beat simple. And I'm blessed to do all these things and more cuz I was blesses to be raised around and exposed to almost all types of music genres, ESPECIALLY GOSPEL.

  • i remember when P diddy had that show. he had a church drummer.. he was GREAT gioing freestyle.. but he couldnt read music..
  • I understand where you are coming from with this topic, and I would say that most, if not all, of the musicians I know come from the church. Along this list are good, as well as, bad musicians. Personally, I was not brought up in the church, I am a Muslim. Within America, I would say that all music has the same root, and the church plays a huge role in that. I wouldn't go as far as saying that that makes someone a better musician. If you were to research Islamic art and the way it is formed, you would be able to see the deep ties it has with life in itself. I would say that this same aspect is put into effect when a Muslim seeks to play music. Furthermore, I believe a clear sign of this is towards the end of Coltrane's career when he recorded Love Supreme and his wife was a Muslim. The music he played had a different effect than before causing the listener to feel the emotion within theirself more deeply. Therefore, I would not say that I would be a better musician if I was raised in a church; being born in America, the church automatically has an effect on you though.
  • i think that being in any other form of band prior to Marching band, you would accustom to things that become habitual even when incorporating what you know, with what you're learning.
  • I was raised in the church my entire life! YES it really does help as a musician!
