CLONED HBCU BANDS?

There are many collegiate bands these days that are nothing but clones of many legendary/established HBCU Bands. How do you feel about these bands playing other bands play-lists that are arranged and played the same style, same interpretation and everything,  same marching styles etc.  Do you feel that even though many of the directors are graduates of HBCU marching bands that have been long established that they should try to be innovative enough to create their programs own identity? Do you think these various band will ever be highly respected as long as they stay in the shadow of the program that they are blueprinted from? I know "Imitation is the Highest form of Flattery" but should a line be drawn?

  • Its simple as this Imitation is the Highest form of Flattery!
  • We are talking about college bands? I think that every university-level band should have its own unique things and not just completely imitate another band.
  • Yes we are talking about College bands lol
  • It would be kind of awkard if the imitator and imitatee meet up. Kind of like in Bring It On when the two cheerleading groups did the same exact routine.
  • Here we go again... here's a summary of how this thread is going to go:

Person 1: "Everybody's copying off SU!"
Person 2: "Nuh uh you're just being ignorant"
Person 1: "Yes huh cause _____ didn't play Neck until SU played it first"
Person 2: "Nuh uh I got the proof on tape from 1932"
Person 3: "SU, JSU, and FAMU are the only original bands anyway everybody is copying they swag"
Person 4: "Nuh Uh all the HBCU's band directors got their degrees from some white university anyway"
Person 1: "Yeah but SU did it first"
    Person 2: "Nuh uh"

    lmao

  • The intent of this topic is just to get your view on bands that do completely copy of other band programs, and should they try some unique things even if their director graduated from the copied university.
  • I'm about to change it beyond the SWAC lol

  • Yeah, that might open the discussion up a little bit more to prevent it from taking that far right turn.
  • Yep lol
