That was from an old article out of The Advocate in 2009. Our chancellor said that for political reasons so that the SUBR campus and athletics could get more control over the revenues produced from the Bayou Classic from the SU System Foundation. More control over the Bayou Classic would allow the athletic department and the Baton Rouge campus to get a much larger amount of revenue that would fill the holes in the budget. We are far from moving down to Div.II. Do you really think we would build a $17 million football stadium expansion(30,000 capacity) and build a new multi-million dollar fieldhouse for our baseball team just so we could move down to Div.II? Really just having an exciting and winning football team would solve the athletic department's problems. Filling the 30,000 seat A.W. Mumford would add extra revenue. The real reason why the department is in bad shape is only because of the sad state of the football program over the last few years. If the team gets back to winning, that money shall reappear.
its a new article from Monday 7-5-2010 published by the advocate. its getting crazy. the state of LA is cutting money left and right. su's athletic director is afraid that they may have to cut more sports due to another budget cut. if they have to cut more sports then will have to drop to D2 because u have to have so many sports programs on campus to be considered D1. gram just had to cut 2 sport programs just so they can make due. i just hope su and gsu make it out alright during this economic riot. maybe once jindel time is up and someone else get in office things will get better for the hbcus in LA because i dont want to see su go D2 because i think the swac is fine just the way it is. each school brings something to board athletically.
Bruh ppl dont seem to realize that we are our own system.. in a recesion.. of course money is going to be scarce.. but we have 4 campuses... there is alot we can cut before we would have to end up cutting programs that will make us a D2 school..
Last summer, SU Chancellor Kofi Lomotey wrote a letter to the System Board of Supervisors, expressing his deep concern for the athletic department’s shrinking budget.
“We cannot (further) reduce the number of sports, because of NCAA regulations. We cannot reduce the number of employees as we are at a minimum now. ... Unless we make the decision to move to Division II, we are saddled with the current budget.”
At the time, it was $6.9 million.
Like I said, that statement was made last year for political reasons. If SU can get back to its normal attendance, then they we will be fine.
