I remember this conversation kind of in another thread but I didn't get a solid. As a "Bandsmen" what is the true criteria you judge a field show on?
Precise Drills/"non precise" Drills
Innovation
Dance Routine
Crowd Reaction
All of the above
Which criterion has the most weight?
Replies
tight drill, uniformity in marching (knee lift, sway, turns), str8 lines, creative formations, ENERGY, creativity period.
dance routines are key too because thats the "entertaining" portion of the show. and its key because MANY times i've seen 2 bands in neutral/unbiased environments perform the same song and one band gets a different reaction than the other.
hell just follow the book when it comes to drill and do what the people do when it comes to dance...and throw a bonus in
I would say precise drills & dance routines. The crowd mostly feeds off those two.
Fugg'a dance routine and the crowd (conditionally, of course...I like the folks in the crowd...*smile*)

Music matters but only if it can be heard and understood...
innovation satisfies the people that follow you
crowd reaction is the combination of all of the above...
i.e. sloppy lines, good music, good dance routine, no innovation, good crowd reaction =good show
i.e. great lines, wack music, no dance routine, great innovation, poor crowd reaction= poor show
your job is to entertain when you are on that field...
Now the Band head says Who Cares about a Crowd? because i don't
i wanna see precision and hear music then do something different and that is a great show...
but we have to realize that the Bandheadz don'trun the world or book most events its the regular people who do
and that's why it matters because best or better is a matter of opinion when it comes to this but I like bands that can make me say "wow that was some good ish right there" and you can out house some one at home...
that's why people have to step their games up when they go against people
