Current Trends/Techniques used by HBCU's

Out of the 80+ H.B.C.U.'s remaining in the United states, only about 40 or so have music programs. Certain programs seem to keep the interest of high school students while others have rapidly declined. Current high school juniors and seniors tend to look for the college or university that will offer the most money. The schools that seem to offer the "best" package still gets the short end of the stick. What trends/techniques does YOUR collegiate band program utilize to attract future students?

  • I'll bite. A myriad of things since Alabama State doesn't give out huge Schollys our out of state waivers, they sell the university the music department and the community as a whole.  Of course we're always fortunate in my oppinion to get those kids who were always going to attend Alabama State University and grew up in the shadow of Ol Mother Dear.

Alabama State University has a strong tradition, be it in Civil Rights, Music, History, Business or especially education.

When i Entered the Music Department it boasted a 100% pass rate of those who took the Praxis and 100% acceptance rate for those who applied to Graduate School and also a 100% job placement rate for its Graduates. bananas

When it comes to Education Alabama State was and is a Juggernaut. You can look at any school board in alabama and see an Alabama State University influence.

Also in Politics Alabama State University is a strong representative in the black community and many state legislatures have ties to Bama State.

All these things may not be directly related to the Music department but it allows the band to recruit itself. The Students pretty much just come. When you have an all around atmosphere you don't have to ask students to join the program. They'll seek you out on thier own.

  • good question
  • Gramblings legacy, legends, the new campus and the good education and family atmosphere sells the university and program.
