  • Thanks for the comment.
  • from what I heard (FROM A FORMER ST AUG MEMBER)..that's not the case at all.
Can you post a video ofrsome audio of what you heard or seen?

    Thanks
  • You know the thing about alumni is that we have a tendency of comparing the present band with some of the legendary bands. This is not fair to those kids. They are the best at what they do at this present time. The 70's say we 80's can't compare. The 80's say that the 90's can't compare and so on. Trust me when I say that St. Aug. hasn't been up to St. Aug standards for over a decade, but every year we have one common goal. That is to be the best we can be and we are heading in the right direction. Unfortunately some of our alumni are our worst critics and weakest supporters. This gentleman listened with a un-bios ear and heard a good sounding band. Not old school St. Aug., not Pre-Katrina St. Aug. just a good sounding band.
  • Sorry mayne no clips but dem boyz did good mayne. I know they not the old Aug but they getting there
  • I get where you're coming from. Alumni will always have there battle with each other and thats with all bands. ST. Aug had a very consistant sound quality year end and year out. Just like a lot of other bands PRE-2000s. Thats not been the case lately. So thats why I would lean toward the alumni.

on the note of people listening with an unbias ear.... its very subjective. NO DISRESPECT to the original poster, but Its been proven time and time again that cats now-a-days will say anything sounds good, when it really doesnt. Either the don't care about quality or they simple don't know what it is. But again, the original poster might be correct in what he heard. That's why I asked for a vid or audio clip so I can listen for myself. I would be truely happy if they had a better sound than last year when I heard them in person.

and IMO, "doing the best you can" only opens the door to failure. Set a goal and "DO IT". It might take longer, it might take harder work...but its done and done correctly. Then you build on that.

    be cool!

  • I feel ya dats how i feel for WM but hopefully you can here them in person this year and you can take it form there.
  • fa sho.

I just get tired of the same old excuse from bands, alumni, and the like. Folks plan to look good and sound good, but when it come times to "show it" they fall short. No reason for that at all. You already knows what was done in the past. The should be no reason them to be better than the previous bands...no matter what year. Seems like folks been going in the opposite direction. Its also real easy to record, listen to clips, then make corrects to the sound quality....just like you would do for a field show. So what went wrong and fix it.

That's from deep in my heart.
  • Da aug is wats up
  • I hope you don't think what I said was no excuse. We are very happy in the direction the band is headed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you implying that every year a program will meet their standards. If that is the case I have to disagree. With the exception of a hand full of collagen programs I constantly see programs rise and fall. On a high school level there isn’t any consistency. Even with the great St. Aug. bands of the past. In 1985 we were horrible on the field, but sounded great. In 1986 we were great on the field, but not as strong as 1985. In 1987 we were good on the field and strong, but not as clean as we could have been had Mr. Edward Allen not left. These aren’t excuses this is just reality. Year after year things change. The Saint went 8-8 last year and didn’t make the playoffs. This year there will be a post season for the Saints. Here is a thought for you. St. Aug. trumpet section leader has been on the horn for 2 ½ years. The co-section on bass horn has been on the horn for 1 ½ years. F-horn section leader 2 years. Our 2 best trombone players are in the 8th and 10th grad. 5 out of 8 baritones have been on the horn for less than a year and one just 2 years LOL. Now you want to tell me that this band should be able to compare to the bands I was in (85, 86, 87) when 95% of us coming from Woodson, Bell, Gregory, Phillip, etc. had been playing since elementary. Starting on a recorder learning how to read music before our mouth even touched that metal or wood. At best we are dealing with a glorified Jr. High School band. Again this is not an excuse, because we are very satisfied with the progress year after year since Katrina. What make us proud is that we are doing it without the feeders we once had. Not an excuse just reality.J harris said:

  • I agree with you Que. The problem I have is that everybody wants to compare St. Aug and the other bands to how they were pre-Katrina but, in my opinion, the 2000-2005 bands era were not all that like they try to make sound. For instance, Listen to St. Aug play Torture in that 2000 era, and listen to the way it is supposed to sound by the 84 band. Even though the 2000 era band may have been louder, the quality compared to 84 sounded like trash. However, they were the best sounding band in New Orleans at the time. I believe those clips are on this website. This is not the only case. You can compare the sound of a bunch of past and present St. Aug bands (i.e. Tribute to Bob Marley, In the Stone, and especially Rhythm is Gonna Get You). The 2000 era seemed louder, but the point I'm trying to make is that the quality of that Aug sound left the building a long time ago. We became more obsessed with being loud.
