Im am very ashamed to see that our hs drumlines in dallas have lost site of originallity. Meaning... almost every drumline in dallas is playing other peoples stuff and in my opinion it does not help the kids learn the things they need to know to be better drummers. It is also disappointing to see that every other drumline is taking after PV, GSU, SU, UAPB and so on and so forth. What happen to being original? Its kinda like seeing someone with the same exact outfit on that you have on. You know the feeling... We as instructors should be paying a great deal of attention to what we are teaching. Its unfair to the kids and there must be a someone out there making up they own shat! Anyone agree? Feel free to be free and express your most honest opinions and thoughts.

  • I totally agree! I've been accused of teaching my kids everything from GSU. I love GSU, and we do have some things from them that we learned at their summer camps. I also love The B.O.X., Funk Train, Krank, and Funk Factory, but I limit and sometimes not allow my guys to play their stuff, because eveybody else here does. Like I tell my kids, "Why would you go to battle, and your enemy already know what you are going to do". But, if you pay close attention to Bishop Dunne, just about everything we play has been written by me, Glenn "DJ Oreo" Robertson Jr.(my son & former UAPB and Carter tenor players), Brian McGill, and some of my students. In my percussion class, I teach my kids how to use Sibelius, and Finale. Part of my assignments is for them to write original music. I have much respect for all of the Dallas Instructors, but I've always said, I hear to much stuff from the colleges. This year we entered the Plano Competition for the first time, just to get to know some of the D-Lines on the North side of Dallas. We only came in 5th, but the experience was great, and we did win the D6 Award for Best Musical Interpretation, and Cadence Arrangements. I think all of the guys in Dallas are very talented, but like you said, there needs to be more originality. Why would you go to Houston, and play ANYTHING from PV or TSU? Just my opinion!
  • Im not a Dallas HS drummer anymore but i must speak up on this. TO ME dallas has never been original "WE" always played either PV or UAPB stuff. Now originality comes in when they put they twist on it but since i moved away i have noticed ALL HIGH SCHOOL DRUMMERS texas wide went down. So i do commend Tony over at Kimball and Jerry over at townview for starting on the path of bringing it back up but dallas needs more COLLEGE GRADUATES coming back to help. Just my opinion

  • I helped at a both schools and I didn't graduate from college. I plan on it but do you know what original is? Original is not having people do your drum camps and get the credit for what they do then thats not original. What does Kimball play besides the stuff I put together for them. Tony put bottom parts to almost everything I put down. We were a team. N WE STILL R. But Skyline!,,, you will not here them playing anything that ne other hs or College plays. Not even puttin my own twist to anybodys stuff. Everythang original. So we will see what these drumlines( TV and SET) will do in November. When I say original Imean different look and sound. Not no watered down BOX or FT, Krank stuff. Im talking BRAND SPANKING NEW. What school do you help out with?
