Do you feel that since hazing is out of (MOST) bands, this is the reason for some lack luster band programs?

As of lately we turn on the television and see marching bands getting hit with fines, lawsuits, and allegations of hazing. Because of this investigative attitude from some students, and people in general. Do you feel that this is the reason for intensity levels in marching bands are fading? Please respond with the truth. Also please lets us know your school, section, and year you crab.

    I agree that marching bands are fading because of hazing but at the same time marching bands where already fading because kids do not care for it like they used to or are not serious like they used to be

    I'm just an observer, but I believe one key component/factor(s) is the evolution of technology ! Laziness also, which I truly believe has been plaguing music the world over for some time now, contributes to the declining of originality & style. Every now and then people need to be slapped up ( not on the verge of totally destroying anyone physically ) but just so they know what time it is and who's in charge. Look what's being boardcast on the tube & radio. Everybody is sampling, but why ? Laziness and no originality !!!

    You have many factors that contribute to the decline of College band programs more specifically HBCU bands.

     

    I will put my examples/ observations in a  bullet point format in no particular order.

     

    • society- You have kids/ new generation of students who are lazy, lack of patience, and lack of pride
    • Hazing- This was something that was used to keep things in order and a strict way of learning. Kind of like when your parents spanked you for doing something bad. However, like I always say how can you paddle someone when at the household they don't even know what time-out is anymore. 
    • music programs- decline because of a domino effect. ex. In most middle/ elementary schools the first thing that gets cut due to budgets are fine arts/ music programs. So now you are left for high school students to pick an instrument, learn how to play, learn scales, learn how to march, all in 4 years just to get ready for perfection in college.
    • Music in general- lets be honest the 80s and 90s music was really marching band friendly. Now we live in this snap your finger and pop it down low age.
    • Generational- New age kids are so conscious of what others think. Back in the day when you went to college you went to school, however you had fun, Marching band was fun.
    • Perception on TV- with all this hazing scandal folks on the outside including parents don't want to be apart of a program with issues like that.
    • Perception on TV- thanks to movies like "American Pie" etc. Being in the band is considered as being a "Geek" ..."That one time in band camp" (not necessarily a bad thing)
    • Easy access to Youtube.com and watch last week show. When in the past you would not know how that band looks, sound, or what that band might be working with until you entered the stadium during the game.
    • Money- Sadly we do live in an economic conscious time where money is the root of many downfall especially with scholarships and going to school.
    • Certain programs aren't entertaining crowds
    • Crowds take for granted the hard work of marching bands

    I think to some degree this is the issue because of the lack of seriousness. I'm not saying that extremes need to be back in there but some type of order is always needed. Besides, it's make you a better person and musician.
