  • Hazing is okay for a Band Program as long as its not taken too far which means no Beating people !!! but other than that hazing keeps crabs in line as long as its not taken to far with physical stuff that could seriously hurt people.
  • Hazing is never Okay. It's a problem that has always plagued our programs and it sad to say that in order for some of us to realize that it has to go, someone will have to die. How far is too far? Too far, is where hazing begins. A little hazing is too far! Besides, if hazing made programs better, then their would be no SAD band programs. Some of the worst disciplined and sounding bands are the ones who does the most NOTORIOUS hazing!
  • whoever made this thread is scared....
  • With current band members...no, these kids in classe 2012 on up are too sensititive to verbal and physical hazing...basically on verbal...if the BD keep saying u need to work, you quit because u think he/she wrong...we all know physical hazing. Most parents dont want it either in bands...

Just have Dedication, Discipline, Respect and MUSICIANSHIP!!!!!!!!

  • I understand thinking that someone is scared...why wouldn't they be. They attend college and join the band to better themselves. Not to make themselves worst by being hazed and initiated into a gang and thuggish way of thinking. Hazing only makes the Hazee want to repeat what was done to them.

Besides, It takes you to have your own child to be beaten for you to realize how STUPID the process and way of thinking is. I've seen some of the WORST hazers break down when their children went through the same process! Why do we accept beatings, brutality, extortion, psychological abuse, etc? Just because it may have happen to you, DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT.

I don't expect anything to change just GOD forbid anything bad to happen to your loved ones on yourself.

  • when I say I "Hazing" I mean like making them do push ups or running by themselves or polishing drums or something like that nothing physical that involves contact

DOES A BAND NEED HAZING FOR ITS PROGRAM TO BE SUCCESSFUL
    ?
  • I agree with that statement; however you cannot beat that into students, you teach that to students. Those who do not want to learn or have dedication, discipline, respect and musicianship should be terminated! SIMPLE SOLUTION!

  • There's a difference between hazing and giving/showing discipline....

    Point. Blank. Simple.

  • I understand, but its considered hazing when one class has to do it. I'm all for push ups if it is enforced evenly. The last time I checked, upperclassmen mess up and cause problems too. Push ups for the sake of doing them is stupid. Push ups for conditioning?...well the whole band needs to be conditioned, not just the crabs.

  • true I mean there has to be some type of discipline to keep everybody in line but I think violence is not the answer
