Does having BRACES effect the way you play???

soo during high school most people get braces. and for band members this can be a real dragg. as a brass player i have braces too i have heard soo many rumors about the "problem with having and later removing braces" so my questions are for those who have had braces or have them. ?does having braces effect how you play? and if so after a long period of time does removing them completely ruins, destroys,or messes up your embouchure? does removing them make your embouchure the same as a beginner brass player?

  • i had em back in high school, the only problem is that they leave some painful marks behind ur lips
  • I had them when I first started playing in the band. That was when I was in the 7th-8th. It was hard but I got used to it. You will get a couple of scars on your lip though. But you can play your instrument as good as anyone else. And I play the sousaphone.
  • I had braces and played brass. It was difficult at first and took some time to get used to. You would have to readjust your playing style because you now have an added addition in your mouth lol

For me, it was really difficult to play loud. The braces hurt the back of my lips all the time. After the braces came off, it was back to normal!
  • I JUST got them (again)......but this is the first time ive had them while playing an instrument...they are only on the bottom tho. It is difficult getting used to i will say that, but its not hard....it can leave you jaws and lips in pain tho...
  • They do for like the first month or so, but you get used to them and you learn how to position your lips around them. It will hurt, but the pain eventually becomes ignorable. I played the tuba and the only problems I had were playing in the upper octaves.
  • i started playin trumpet wen i had braces n it wasnt really that hard once you got use 2 it...but they make ya lips swollen becuz of tha pressure u put on em.....n wen i got them off mann it was so hard 2 play becuz i had restart on everithing..u jus gotta practice more wen u get tha braces off so u can get back 2 normal.....
  • dam thats what im scared off. all these years ive worked hard to better myself. ive played through the pain of having braces and dint mind getting my lips cut when i added too much pressure from the mouthpiece. i dont wanna start all over again. its my senior year and in the fall i will be going to PV "marching storm" ive gotten super good on my high octaves and low octaves as well just the thought of my having to start all over again scares me lol.
  • i feel yo pain i was tha same way..lol..but i jus practiced 10x harder to get my chops back in shape....
