Drumline Live: Prunalysis

I want to take the opportunity to give overwhelming praise for the show.

Drumline Live

I had heard of the show before, but honestly thought it would be a low budget pale imitation of the movie itself with instrumentalists that generally sounded bad.

I was joyfully surprised.

The cast of Drumline Live may be one of the most talented groups of traveling musicians/performers anywhere in the nation.

If you have not yet seen the show please do so and understand you do have to know anything about band to be amazed by it. So bring your friends and family members as well.

A couple of things:

No. 1 - It is not just about band. Drumline Live is a complete homage to the African-American Musical Experience. Their performance touches everything from R&B, to Gospel, to Marching Band to Soul to Doo Wap and many more.

No. 2 - Sound quality is amazing! With all the dancing while playing I expected to see hear some of sound quality. I was wrong. Everything sounded great. I heard not one missed note, not one off tone, and belief with a group of about 6 trumpets, 3 mellos, 5 trombones, 2-3 baritones, and 1 alto there was no place to hide.

  • No. 3 - The energy level was amazing! Imagine doing your entire half-time for a solid hour and a half with only small breaks in-between.

No. 4 - Although, I did find the overall percussion section itself lacking, and the tuning of the bass drums disturbing, the individual percussion features were outstanding. There was one snare drum battle that had 2 snare players doing things I didn't even thing were possible with a stick.

No. 5 - A high level of talent. Many of the players, performed multiple roles; ie, switching instruments, (going from Horn to Mellophone, or (wind instrument to percussion), playing the drumset, dancing and even singing. Special shoutouts go to the gospel soloist (who I think also played a mean low trombone), the featured gospel trombone soloist (kicked my butt all across the town), the saxophone soloist, the trumpet soloist, the drum set soloist, and the percussion soloist.

No. 6 - The show was educational, helpful those not familiar with the Showstyle artform understand the style. (There was a very diverse crowd).

There you have, ladies and gentleman...

If you value this artform that we work at so hard, then do whatever you have to do to see the show.

  • By the way...

Comparing performance to performance. I felt that the show was even better than Blast...The Drum Corp equivalent.
