Elements and history of Corp Style bands....

Please fill me in and break down a typical show. All i kno is that goal is perfection with heavy emphasis on military style. (Gud insightful video clips n links r welcomed)For show style...we aim to entertain. Typically starting with a big fast entrance, fanfare, drill, ballad, dance feature, dance block, closer....TYPICALLY. How does this work for Corp Style bands?

  • Corps.. funny because corps style came after Show style. but the name show style wasn't really coined until the 90's
    • Military came first...
  • Well.....a corps style show can be a bit more involved. The misconception is that corps style's focus isnt to entertain. WRONG. If you can see a D1 competition live and not be entertained, you need to check your pulse.

It starts by the announcer askin "DRUM MAJORS (insert names here), IS YOUR BAND READY?" The head drum major confirms by doing a signature salute to the audience. Then the announcer says "YOU MAY TAKE THE FIELD FOR COMPETITION!"

Most corps will do a fast/ energetic intro usually with only movements first (or softer music) that leads into a really big opening crescendo. After that the format is generally something kinda like a symphonic work (fast-slow-fast, or fast-slow-fast-slow-fast). with usually a break in between sections for the band to catch their breath. There is usually a percussion feature at the beginning or before the last fast/powerful section and their shows ALWAYS end with a big powerful finish.

Ive marched both corps style and showstyle. each has its ups and downs. This show follows most of what i described (not to the tee, but close enough for discussion purposes).

    • Very nice! Ty for sharing.

      Question...which do u prefer? Y?
      • Cant really say......but ill say that a corps style drill is WAY harder than a showstyle drill. There is no way you are perfecting a show with a drill AND music that involved in 5 days. Showstyle is obviously more easily enjoyable. And id take the atmosphere of the hbcu scene over just a competition scene, even tho i do miss competitions .
    • Pretty much what underage said, corp bands focus mainly on a shows piece which they may or may not use music lyres for, it's usually a complete sound score arrangement for a movie or something.(rocky, inception, etc) It's really a focus on the main piece, sound, percussion accuracy, drill formation precision, they judge different sections, or on brass/woodwind/percussion section, pit, etc.

The corp style band I marched for it was the incredibles show, with did marching style in which you roll your feet, and always keep your bells facing the audience.  These bands usually have a 5-15 total song list, so they really only have to remember the field show stuff, fight song, and alma mater.  South Georgia corp style competition used to go down!lol.

Meant to mention this......during a corps' percussion feature, you will find the best drilling you will ever see ANYWHERE.

    • So thats why the corps schools have bee doing 007...In my days they were all trying to do this...I will have to upload a better copy in a sec...
