FAMU student clubs to resume recruiting members

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida A&M University is lifting a ban on student clubs and organizations from recruiting new members.

Former FAMU President James Ammons imposed the ban back in January following the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion and the arrests of several FAMU students on charges of hazing other students.

FAMU's vice president for student affairs announced Thursday the ban would be lifted next month.

But the university is putting in new academic requirements for members of fraternities, sororities and student clubs. Students must have completed their freshman year with at least 24 credit hours and a 2.0 grade point average.

Clubs and organizations will also be required to submit monthly reports on community service activities.

The university is also imposing mandatory orientation sessions for student organizations, including sessions on hazing.

  • SToooooPID! What's the point of being a "freshman" at FAMU?

That first year is when families ship their bundles of joy off to college. The student joins club, parties like crazy, joins the band, gets a letter or two, racks up $20k in loans, flunks courses, is placed on academic probation for the 2nd semester, cant apply for loans for the 3rd semester. And like 60% of freshman who shouldn't be attending any college in the first place, they dropout...

Point is, I know FAMU knows this. Well, they probably don't, but should. Most people attend as freshman, never graduate but rep the school and whatever organization(s) they joined as freshman, for life. Kinda defeats the purpose lol.

FAMU's administration is continuing to make ridiculous decisions. Do these people think? Those type of freshmen are a colleges life line.

  • Damn you can be a freshman and join organizations at famu?...I know at most college or universities u have to be at least a sophomore..good idea famu
  • A majority of entering freshmen dropout after a year. The school can suck a guaranteed year of tuition out of them by bending the rules. Gotta see the hustle folks
  • Its not that easy, cause if their retention rate gets too high, then the state gonna suck the funding right back out. RETENTION is WAAAAAAAy too big of an issue at Black Colleges for me to believe that FAMU doesnt realize that.  Id have to see an actual, factual copy and why they made the decision that they did
