TPD Statement on Recent FAMU Hazing Allegations:
The Tallahassee Police Department received information from the FAMU Police Department about a possible hazing case today and will provide updates as we determine if a crime has occurred.
Tallahassee, FL - Florida A&M University (FAMU) has suspended Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity, a business-related student organization, pending an investigation into an alleged hazing incident, FAMU Interim President Larry Robinson announced today.
The suspension was imposed Thursday, after it was alleged that members of Alpha Kappa Psi verbally abused prospective members in a meeting held off campus and without an advisor present.
It is a violation of FAMU intake rules for clubs and organizations to hold off-campus meetings without advisors. No physical abuse has been alleged.
Because the alleged incident took place off campus, FAMU Interim Police Chief John Earst has referred the matter to the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD). FAMU Police will work closely with the TPD on the investigation, Robinson said.
“While I am extremely upset and disappointed to hear that another student organization may have engaged in hazing and at the very least may have violated our clear rules for intake, it is good to know that students are feeling empowered to step forward and report incidents like these,” Robinson said. “The only way we will eradicate hazing from our campus and from our culture is to resist hazing and report it to authorities.”
