The glorification in HBCU BAND poll ranking of larger size band programs at the expense of smaller size bands at times is not based on how well you sound, but the size of the band. This trending is becoming a hindrance to proper band ranking for good sounding smaller HBCU band programs. Lack of numbers for too many fans and judges suffocates anything pleasantly fresh or good sounding. Just what do I imply? Look at it this way if your band is not part of the SWAC or MEAC, the chance of your band getting recognized as a top tier band is almost zero. Even if you are a large band, not members of the SWAC or MEAC, you get looked over many times for the top spots or any spots in the ranking battleground. I am not saying certain bands not get a due reconnection for excellent musicianship. But music powerfulness and bodies covering the whole football field need not get ten thousand bonus points. Our smaller HBCU bands play the same music as the larger HBCU bands, and they play music well. But they suffer from many thanking that a smaller college or University can not be as good as the big boys. As a friend once said, if you did not break my eardrum, you not much of a band, and look, they only have one Drum major. Whenever money is in the game, as others have said before me, it can suffocate anything and anyone else, and I think some have been seduced. Everyone's attention span is getting shorter. So what do you consider that can help.? ---- James Stewart 11/17/2019

J-Settes(Thrill of a Billion Eyes) were influenced by the Motion of the Ocean (Class Act of the Swac)https://bandhead.org/forum/topics/j-settes-thrill-of-a-billion-eyes-were-influenced-by-the-motion2019-05-26T17:05:19.000Z2019-05-26T17:05:19.000ZJuz Miguelhttps://bandhead.org/members/JuzMiguel

According to one of the FIRST Jay-Settes (Evelia Jones), she actually brought the name “The Sonic BOOM of the South” and the Settes were actually influenced by the Motion of the Ocean!!!!! Then everything changed when Torregano took over in 2003. Since then up to now, many individuals have come to an unwritten code that whenever they hear about MVSU being a good and/or decent band, the SWAC's response can easily be summarized in a single picture.

From 2003 to recent many bands once considered Valley to be a bottom, earning them the nickname "Doormat of the SWAC." But as of late the baby sibling, who was once picked on by everyone of it's older siblings, decided that enough was enough. This year has been a sign that those things could possibly change. I say possibly because things do change from year to year and I don't want to be wrong when things are uncertain for the moment. Valley changed directors in 2012 and since then, have made strides to improving the band program. So with that bit of information, I will be posting a video for each year to show how much they have improved from such the fall of 2004.

But first, lets look at some Tramiel era footage, for old-times sake.

Now let's go forward into the new millennium. I were informed by BOOK talks were in the work and sure this topic were discussed on this website months ago but since at this day and age many of us are disgruntled by the Honda procedures, wouldn't it be nice to see this popular HBCU conference compete to really see who's band is superior and or who deserves a silver bowl of Slaw. I originally joined bandhead...well marchingsport in 2004. It use to be so much trash talking on here that you would be lucky to keep a thread on here. We were so competitive that some people would even get personal..Hatred twords the other band and institution..Heck I even remember some guys would actually make dates to fight in the endzone...I mean it use to go down! So I asked myself what changed?...And I came to the conclusion that the SWAC has taken it to another level by recruiting this new generation of musicians who are doing LESS TALKING & MORE PLAYING!!!! There are still a few people on here that can tell you about the past years on bandhead as well as the musicianship from past years. For my old heads on here do you agree that the musicianship and playing ability of this new generation of SWAC musicians is really good? A lot of it has to do with there being a lot more REAL music out now too, but really about how they are playing it. The whole snap music/rap tunes got a little rediculous but all that has changed!!
