  • the problem is there aren't any dances coming out to use on a routine.back in the day there were a variety of dances you could use in a show now there's just pop that thang and soldier boy.that's why so many bands are turning to gimmicks.and if you notice the best shows that are done by hbcu's are the throwback shows.
  • Halftime show's are about drilling not dance routines. I think part of the problem is that more bands put emphasis on changing their dance routines rather than changing drilling aspects of their shows.
  • HMMM.. I DON'T KNOW BOUT THAT AND DRILLS AREN'T THAT EMPRESSIVE EITHER , JUST SEEMS LIKE THE CREATIVE ART OFTHE SHOW, MUSIC,DRILL, SLOW BALLAD ,DANCE ROUTINE...I GUESS THE WHOLE ART OF PUTTING A HALFTIME SHOW HAS GONE DOWN. .... SEEMS LIKE THE SHOWS ARE RUSHED NOW .. ...

  • Well i too think the shows have gone down a lil than what they used to be in the past....To the band head we know that nailing that drill as perfect as possible is what your band director is more focused on...although they are concerned with the overall show, i know my BD was always wanting us to get the drill perfect b/c he knew that we would put a lot into the dance routine anyway....Now for the crowd...the majority of a HBCU crowd could careless if u drill or not..they just want to be entertained...Now of course a crowd will recognize if you spelling your school name or some kind of symbol, or you doing the score...but they have know idea what step 2 drill, pinwheel, or star drill is...again they just want to be entertained...The dance routine is something that they familiarize with, b/c most bands are doing the latest steps, playing the latest pop tune, or doing some back in the day throwback stuff...thats why i liked SU's shows this year b/c they mixed ole with new...and im not too keen on there dance routines..but they did what entertained peopl..now gimmicks are ok, but when they become repetitive and predictable it gets old....

I will always like GSU's dance routines b/c its never the same.....
  • In terms of importance, halftime hasn't dropped off. You still see hundreds of people leave the game after the halftime shows. It's just...(more overly the 5th quarter) the stands have come up to the same level of importance as the field show. I think the stands are equally as important as the halftime performance because, it offers opportunity for restoration. You want to be able to say to your friends in the opposing band....."Hands down we totally waxed yall this year". But due to either a jacked up drill, bad sound, bad arranging or a boring dance routine, you're not always able to say that. Winning the stands battle allows you to redeem yourself if you get waxed on the field. The average bandsmen will at least want to be able to save face and say..."Yall may have got us on the field but we got yall in the stands". This gives you something on which you can stand and defend your program's repitation and honor. This is a universal marching band foundational truth (especially in the SWAC). Now a days, you have to prepare for 4 aspects of the game; pregame battle, stands during the game, halftime, and 5th quarter. If you don't, you stand to get WAXED. All areas are judged seperately but equally.
  • i think the drill is more important in the show real talk it is. but the dance routine/ a gimmick has to be good also cuz the crowwd will call u out on it
  • halftime shows have fallen off. trust me im in the boom (i know). i dont know why or when it happened but i guess it happened because out of the whole 4-5 hours of the game only 10 min is on the field. It hurt me to watch a field show after the game. BD's cross the board gotta step up. Well except for SU
  • *as much stuff that we do on the field...our halftime shows are only 8:00 long sometimes shorter...we just keep moving from the time we pull on till the exit there is never a stoppin point....

*one of the main reasons i love our drills is because we make alot of formations in the drill without it being a 2 STEP move..to me that shows more creativity when you do more than just 2 steps in your drill to make formations other than words, scores, etc,.

*i dont think that the actual quality of drills have gon down i just think ppl have decided to go with a more easier way of drillin which may or may not take from the halftime show

*the main thing is that IN EVERYTHING YOU DO ..DO IT WITH PRECISION AND ENERGY...if you do that you cant go wrong in a halftime show
  • I don't really know why the halftime shows have dropped off maybe because they dont feel like practicing on it too much so they make it as easy as possible (March on field, break off into concert formation, play a song, go into another formation, dancers dance, then like a really long dance routine, then march off field to a song.)Now thats what ive seen from some of the hbcu's this year. But, some bands like JSU and Alcorn dont even let the percussion drill.(really not that bad 4 jsu because they are larger)but for alcorn they are small and they drill w/o percussion leaving massive gaps in drills and formations.SU and GSU have always been great with drilling and this year UAPB has really stepped up.PROPS
  • halftime is going down the drain because bands are only focused on the fifth quarter! its a shame when bands will sit in the stands and do nothing for an entire game then expect people to stay for their fifth quarter. most of the crowd leaves before the game is over anyway so halftime is really the genuine time to showcase. remember this fellow bandsmen the band is a spirit group just like the cheerleaders or mascot our objective is to lead the time on to victory and inspire school spirit in the crowd. now when it come to the field show this is like a commercial in a television program its shorter and more flashy and eye catching then the actual quarter why do you think commercials can be stuck in our minds for years field shows can too i'll never forget the first time i saw the lion roar, ocean wave, star drill, tiger run, or drummajor backbend we need to focus more on our duty to our alma maters just look at how many bands have nicknames that have nothing to do with the school we are not seperate from the school. now it does get boring when a band does the same thing every week or year but thats where self pride steps in. i encourage everyone to be unbiased and check out a UAPB, SU, or GSU season DVD and look at how diverse the shows are week to week especially UAPB's and let's bring back the art of the field show
