What part of a halftime show is the most important? The Marching(straight lines and uniformity) or the dance routine(moves, skits) or song selection? To ME I think if you ain't marching you ain't doing nothing! I see far too often bands with no lift, on the wrong foot and they don't seem to care about it!!! I just put this question out there to see the responses!
You need to be a member of bandhead.org to add comments!
For Bandheads/Musicians: I believe the most part of the show is the show it's self. The sound, marching, formations, song selections, and dance routines each contributes to the show.
IMO, you can have the marchingness band around and still sound like shat.
For the crowd: The most important part of the halfime show is the energy and creativity. Typically, crowd are looking for high energy and creative formations, dances, etc.
Example: Band A plays Cold Hearted Snake and performs a step 2 slant drill. Provides time for auxillary to perform, plays a concert selection and executes a dance routine.
Band B plays a current song that incorporates a formation related to the song being played. Provides time for auxillary to perform, plays a concert selection, and executes a dance routine.
Band C barely presents a halftime performance but plays in the stands the entire time.
Which would the crowd remember at the end of the day?

So picture drilling is greater than precision drilling?
For the actual topic, I only watch the actual drill. Dancers are fine if they are good. Not a fan of dance routines.
No, I'm not saying that. It depends on what the crowd prefers. Some prefer traditional 8 to 5 while others prefer picture drills. That is why I separated bandhead and crowd. Neither style of drill is greater than another.
For example, JSU home crowd adores the Boom. When the 100 use to come to the BOTB in Jackson, we got mad love. Did it meant we are better because we did picture drills, no. The crowd was excited to see something different. The same applies when a GOOD band performs a 8 to 5 drill, it's something different.
All are important to me, if you lack in one area the next area can take up the slack and get you by which is unacceptable but if you're clicking in all areas that's a great program. I have never understood bands that suck on the field be it drill or break down but say they are the number one band because they can blow loud in the stands. Number one in your own mind. lol
First and foremost, I HATE DOING FIELD SHOWS!!! With that being said, no band( AND I MEAN NO BAND) does 90's the entire field show.... if your lines are straight and there is a certain uniformity on the field thats wonderful, but IF YOU SOUND LIKE SHIT... then what the hell is the point? i can get any group of people and teach them step 2's all day.... hell i taught a simple step 2 drill to an elementary school... but the SOUND is what puts bands over the top... most drills nowadays are getting very similar anyways... rarely do you see anything too out the box....
Uniformity and Execution are the most important...
If you are gonna do ANYTHING on the field, then do it right...
I grow tired of bands bragging about only ONE aspect of their show (yeah even my own). If you are gonna drill, then drill like hell. If you are gonna dance, then dance like hell. Don't prioritize one aspect over the other if you are gonna do both. It sounds like a cop out as to why your show probably sucks.
"Yeah we got the tightest drills"...but your dance routine blows? FAIL
"Ain't no band out dancing us"...but you can march or drill worth two cents? FAIL

whoever won the 5th honestly.. most likely Band C in this case.
But a fancy formation will get a few mentions but not a deciding factor to people i wouldn't think
" the SOUND is what puts bands over the top."
Exactly
I disagree with no bands march 90's the show....Southernand BCU do a damm good job at it.
