BEING AN OLD BANDHEAD, I FEEL THAT THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY MUSIC & BAND PROGRAMS ARE NOT SUFFICIENTLY DOING THEIR JOBS TO EDUCATE, MOLD, AND MOTIVATE THESE YOUNG MUSICIANS...WHICH IN TURN LEADS TO PISS, POOR, LAZY, PACIFIED, & UNDISCIPLINED MARCHING BAND PROGRAMS THAT "FEED" INTO HBCU PROGRAMS. SOME OF THESE USE TO BE POWERHOUSES IN THE MARCHING BAND WORLD BUT DUE TO THESE CANCERS & POISONS MENTIONED ABOVE, THE MOVEMENT SEEMS TO BE DECAYING..... SO TO YOU HIGHSCHOOL BANDHEADS, PLEASE LEARN THE HBCU BAND HISTORY AND TAKE THE TIME TO DISCIPLINE YOURSELF TO LEARN, DEVELOP, & PERFORM ABOVE THE "I LL JUST DO ENOUGH TO GET BY" STANDARDS THAT HAVE PLAGUED THE BAND HEAD WORLD...

  • yeah, but you can't blame the the students all the time, you can't blame the directors all the time. as for me. I'm glad to know that these folks on here are even Exposed to the Lives of College band.. which honestly this is the "Reality" behind the whole bandhead thing. Anyone outside of band wouldn't get ANYTHING on here..lol

But back to the the main subject. There are places such as New Orleans (because im from N.O i have to use the example) were we've had GREAT middle school bands in the 60's 70's and 80's.. which fed to Good and NEW high school bands in those era's..... Up until the Mid 90's where the School system added a New Exit Exam, They started dropping middle school bands and Closing some area schools causing a decline in Quality Musicians to feed certain high school programs..... With that said.. You had people coming to High school Totally unprepared. therefore many were not as serious about band as those who had experienced middle school competition and so on and so forth.

Everything We Learned in elementary/middle schools were Used and perfected by high schools .. if it weren't for our middle schools here such as Andrew J Bell jr. high and Carter G Woodson jr. high, a great band like St Aug hs wouldn't have such a strong history of Legendary Musicians... .i can say the same for Kennedy HS who's only had a band for about 35 years... Without Middle school feeders they'd be NOTHING .. These were the same Students who made SU what they were. .. But for us.. like i said, It wsn't all the Directors, It was Political Decisions by Those above our Educational system.. and This is why also All the Middle Schools I name No-longer Exist..

..With all that said... Man.. Directors can only do so much.. and of course its up to the Student to Take it on to College.. because here in N.O we have Music Legends who've never marched in a College band .. Maybe they've played Music in College.. but Many have never marched in an HBCU bands...

To Us as well.Here.. If you were a "Legend" in high school, Crabbing in college especially going to SU, Certified that You were a TRUE LEGEND.. lol

But If you were an Average Player.. people kinda just wonder how u even made it in SU's band since they were full of N.O legends at the time,.,,
    LOL

    im just sayin..

The High School bands were Recruiting At High Schools by 2002.... which is Sad........ but thats all we had... at the same time.. All these same students weren't going to College...
  • no not entirely JUST SIMPLY IN SELECT BAND PROGRAMS.. EXAMPLE I REMEBER WHEN ALCORN STATE AND VALLEY WERE POWERHOUSES IN THE SWAC JUST AN EXAMPLE NOT SLAW, BUT HOWEVER IT IS SPECIFIC BAND PROGRAMS THAT HAVE YOU KNOW FELL OFF AND DEVELOPED THAT "CANCER" YOU STATED
